Don't get too excited, it's just a rogue cluster from my 'Jubilee' BB. I quickly gobbled these up after the snap shot. They tasted better than expected.

Yes, after the monsoons came my blueberries and huckleberries bloomed and set a few fruits. Strangely enough so did several of my deciduous fruit trees!

This has been the deep soaking rain that we needed last rainy season. Good to have it already this season.

Oh, we had monsoons late in the summer. The rain this week was very welcome. Total for the storm I had 1.5 inches for my location in Vista CA.

Hermitian what kind of huckleberries do you have that fruit in Socal? How big are the fruit?

I am growing Evergreen Huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum) obtained from One Green World. I grow them on the east-facing side of a structure along with my blueberries -- this is their preferred position I have observed in the wild. The mature plants I had at my previous home produced berries about pea size. At my newer location here in Vista, the plants have been growing about 1.5 years since arrival. They flower and set fruit almost non-stop with fruits about 1/2 pea size. The Finches have discovered them! I'm now building an enclosure with 1/2" hardware cloth on wooden frames.

Ah, rain in CA! There's a climate topic suitable for the Fruit and Orchards forum. Thank you Mr. Clint- all my blueberries are in the freezer. You make me almost feel spring is on the way. May this be the first of many soakers this rain season for you Californians- just not, like, 9" in one night. I have a lot of memories of those type of storms at my old home in Topanga. No big deal in the Valley though.

harvestman, the temperatures have been pretty mild too. Slept nicely last night with the bedroom window open. They are predicting rain at the end of the coming week.

I second that for more rain or else divert some of the Columbia River down south:) Brady

I have no issues with the water supply here in Vista CA. In particular, I do not have a lawn. My water usage for 60 fruiting perennials and 120 annual/perennial herbs and vegetables is 1/2 to 1/3 of neighbors with a lawn and no produce. |
