I know I shouldn't have, but I kept my pomegranate plants in pots this summer (they are only 1 year old), and due to interfering vacation plans, I took them indoors for the last 6 weeks. One is quite healthy with dark green foliage, and the other is OK but does have some yellowed leaves. I understand that I should try to get some chill time for my plants, but it's now too cold to leave them outside. Can I move them to my garage and leave them there for the winter? Should I keep them indoors for the rest of the winter? Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you very much!

If you have an un heated garage, your pomegranates will slowly going into dormant. Just make sure you keep the soil moist through out winter. Tony

Thank you Tony! My garage is unheated. So it sounds like I should move the pomegranates into the garage? One other question - Do you think it will put the plants into shock since there's no window in the garage?

Not sure pomegranates really need chill hours. But yes an unheated garage (with sunlight) that is not allowed to fall below freezing will produce chill hours. Don't know if chill hours count until leaves are gone.

I feel like I might've read somewhere that although not necessary, the chill hours will help harden the bark. My garage doesn't have sunlight. Will this pose a problem? Thank you again!

Writonwater Without sunlight and cool garage, the leaves will turn yellow then the tree will go into dormant. Just keep the soil moist until spring. Tony

Yes, you are right Tony. I wasn't thinking. Sunlight is unnecessary if you are inducing/maintaining dormancy.
