| This is supposedly the most cold hard of the Flamin' Fury line. A little description:
Flamin'Fury PF 24C-Cold Hardy Peach is touted by its breeder as being one of the most cold hardy and frost resistant peaches he has ever seen. It has attractive large, red fruit that have excellent flavor and quality. We are getting good reports out of colder areas where peach are not usually succesful that PF24C-Cold Hardy is surviving the cold winters. However, since it is still such a new peach, we cannot claim it to be hardy to Zone 4 for sure, but we suspect it is one of the hardier peaches around! |

| I have grown PF-24c peach several years and find it hardy to freezing at bloom time, but not more so than Contender. It and Contender along with Risingstar had partial crops when I expected a total failure after a 19 degree freeze. |

| I will put my 2 cents in now that I have had my peaches in for a few years. I have not found PF24-C to be any more cold hardy or bud hardy than any of my other trees. My O'Henry made it through a real tough winter last year just as well as the PF24-C, and there is no comparison in taste. (The trees both made it but there was no fruit due to a horrible spring) Apparently McKay is not Wisconsin Balmer, as the thread linked above was mentioned to be. The link below also mentions it. I decided to get Contender, Polly, Ranger, and Indian Free Peach for my aunt in Iowa. This link might help too: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fruit/msg081648531967.html Here is another link regarding Earlitreat that is also hardy enough in Iowa. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fruit/msg072247337437.html All of the above mentioned peaches can be found at Bay Laurel, I believe, but they have a deadline to special order that was last Friday. Maybe you can beg them to add yours if you decide. If you really want a PF24-C you can have mine:) |

| I agree with milehighgirl: cold hardiness, and especially frost hardiness among peaches, and many other fruits, is not as variable as the breeders want you to believe. I have made the mistake of choosing varieties based on these factors (especially frost hardiness) long before becoming a reader of this forum. Now I wish I had just gone with the tastiest varieties that have good growth characteristics. Reliance peach is an example of this mistake. It died back just as much as the others when we had our record cold a few years back, and blooms at exactly the same time as the others, losing it's crop of fruit most years as well. And then I find out the fruit quality leaves much to be desired. |
