Borer Worm problems

TreeRoots

I didn't know whether to post this in the organic forum, or the pest forum, but here we go. Just went outside in the garden and saw a bunch of mushy sap(?) around the base of my tree. I'd noticed balls of sap collecting around random parts of the trunk here recently (in the past couple of seasons), and the tips of the stems dying, but hadn't put two and two together. I pushed back the sap and dirt around the tree and picked a Borer worm out of the heap, but I get the feeling there's more.
The tree was planted two years ago in my butterfly garden, so I'd like to keep things organic. Is there a way to save the tree? Will the borers spread to surrounding trees and shrubs?
