Walnut tree pruning question

Hello all

I have a Pedro walnut that we planted last fall as a 5' whip. Now. In just one years time, have a 11' tall tree. However, the lateral branches are only 12 - 18" long. So we essentially now have a 11' whip. The tree is clearly healthy but am concerned about the explosive growth and lack of lateral growth. The tree is planted in decomposed granite, gets moderate water and hasn't been fertilized. Was I to cut the whip when originally planted? We have no issues pruning our other trees (citrus, stone fruit, figs, poms, etc...) but really don't have a clue with walnuts.

Thanks in advance,
Lawrence - Montrose, CA zone 9a/SZ 21
