How do you 'preserve' your outdoor garden art?

This will be a two part question

1. what kinds of art have you made and placed in your garden

and

2. what have you used to make it with in order to preserve it from frost, rain, sun damage.

for example...I like Patio Paints for outdoor projects. I have taken boards, transfered a pattern onto them, painted with Patio Paints and placed the signs in my landscaping. Question...should I have done any other steps in order to have my sign last in our Canadian weather?

I usually put primer paint on them first, before the patio paints. And I usually put the wood pieces in the garage for the winter. I also prime the cement pieces, but they've been okay to leave out all winter.
