Today when out walking I noticed the whinberries are ready. Also known as blaeberries, bilberry etc. A few months ago I posted a photo of them in flower. Have to get my special whinberry picker and start picking.

RE: Yummy!

What's a whinberry? We're plucking blueberries now.

RE: Yummy!

Vaccinium myrtillus.

RE: Yummy!

What does whinberry taste most like? Looks like it would taste like a blueberry.

RE: Yummy!

The taste is very similar but with a sharper and more distinct taste. Having tasted both I much prefer the taste of whinberry. They are difficult to buy cause they take so long to pick. Blueberrries can be found but they just don't have the right flavour. when I was a child in Northern England you could buy whinberry tarts - I remember the sensation of the fantastic juice running down the face. You cannnot seem to get them anymore.
So once a year I go to good whinberry area and do a good pick. My wife is a super cook and she makes the most wonderful whinberry pie. Absolute heaven!!!
