The Last of its Kind... Kanaloa kahoolawensis

Matt G

Please meet Kanaloa kahoolawensis. The plant pictured is the last remaining individual of a monotypic genus endemic to the Hawaiian islands. In 1992 this species was discovered on an isolated sea stack off the southern cliffs of Kaho'olawe. All attempts with air layers, cuttings, and tissue culture have failed. The only known way to propogate this plant is by seed and attempts to pollinate flowers (mimosa-like puff balls) have also failed . This plant resides at the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kaua'i.

Very interesting! I hope they find success propagating it by tissue or other means.

I see you're using the name of another rare plant found there in HI. Looks like you have an exciting career ahead of you. Good luck!
