This is a hover-fly. I could try and guess which species but I'd probably be wrong. They are true flies, the adults eat nectar or pollen and the larvae are carnivorous inch-worms.

You can spot a hover fly, apart from the very obvious hovering dead still, from the large compound eyes, stubby antennae, and only one pair of wings

and do tell, what's your camera? those are breathtaking!

Okay, I've seen Hover flies before...just never so close AND holding STILL!! Hee hee! Thanks for the info!

The camera is a Canon A75. Its probably obsolete by now. Some of the macro shots in The Cactus Gallery at the moment are stunning. Check out BillinSC's super-macro setting that he just found on his camera :)
