I make Plantain infused oil for excema; also Chickweed and Calendaula are good. You can make a decoction (very strong tea) and try that while you are waiting for the oil to "cure". I'd do some reaserch to find out what type of carrier oil would be best for a babies skin. Also, Burt's Bees makes a very nice ointemnt with zinc that my husband used this past week, and he is sold on it for a non-malignant cancerous type skin disorder, similar to excema. Good luck! Lynn

Vitamin E base cream (good quality is expensive but worth it.)To this add..

Herbal extracts (best added in a fluid extract form), add 1-2 mls of each to say a 200g vit E base and apply topically 3+ times daily. Consider Chickweed, Calendula, Licorice, Arnica, Chamomile ( add no more than 5), along with a teaspoon of powdered vit C and another of powdered zinc, possibly a little magnesuim powder.

Until further help is sought avoid harsh soaps, exposure to cigarette smoke, spraying deoderants etc within the vacinity of the child, ensure soft clothing.

The baby should be assessed by a skin specialist to determine cause of eczema. Although it often clears in babies after age 18 mths, it can be due to food or environmental allergies and may be associated with other systemic disorders.

See link below to a non profit, eczema patient support site.

Hopefully the baby has already been checked out by its physician to make sure this is eczema and not something else.

And caution is in order before liberally applying any ointments containing numerous herbal ingredients - some (like Calendula in susceptible persons) are sensitizing agents and can cause allergic reactions, worsening the problem instead of helping it.

Also avoid use of Calendula if you have a family history of sensitivity to the Composiae family of plants (ragweed, daisies, chryanthemums etc).

These adverse reactions occur very rarely.
