what has happened to this forum?

I couldn't understand why there weren't many recent threads on this forum. So I took the time to go back and look at previous postings, back to 08. Now I understand why. There were some good threads, great advice from herbalbetty and others, and a helpful, like-minded vibe.
But there was a common theme running through them : I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. I find this to be more than just coincidence, or just the passion of two scientific, skeptical people. What I see is an attack on all things herbal. Yes, there's a place for the discussion of medicine and science in this forum, and a difference of opionions. But after reading, I find this this attack to be systematic and persistent in nature. What gives? |

| It's quite simply that some people like to blow their own trumpet! Ad infinitum, ad nauseum. Which, while irritating to many, they have a right to do. It's easy enough to ignore - just avoid reading the posts by those trumpet-blowers! |

| This again. If novice knew more about the history of this forum (I've been posting here for more than ten years), she'd realize that there have been periods here when there were many more posters with medical and scientific backgrounds who provided a check on bad and sometimes dangerous advice. One example that came up recently was this thread, in which our own daisyduckworth is the first to throw cold water on someone promoting an unproven herbal cancer remedy. In fact, daisy has said before that she posts far less frequently than formerly, largely due to people who dogmatically insist on herbal therapy in cases where it is not indicated. Apparently she feels differently now. Be that as it may, the amount of traffic on this forum has varied over the years and the number of informed/evidence-based/skeptical posters has varied, and there doesn't seem to have been much relation between the two. The only change I have seen recently is an increase in the amount of direct personal insult and nasty insinuation against posters seen as The Enemy because they value evidence-based herbalism and complementary medicine. There wouldn't be so much of this if we had a properly moderated forum (Spike would never have tolerated it in the old days, nor the free-for-all spamming), but we don't. It would have been wonderful if the Big Pharma Conspiracy™ had been paying me all this time to post here. I could have retired by now. Unfortunately for novice's speculations, I and many others who have posted in a skeptical vein here over the years have done it for free, not counting the satisfaction gained in promoting good, science-based herbalism and steering people away from useless and hazardous treatment. It's possible some lives were saved in the process. By all means, if this bugs the heck out of you, novice, ignore such threads and comments. Some message boards even have an "ignore" function, which lets people short on willpower avoid ever seeing posts from those they dislike. I've never needed such a function, being perfectly able to pass over posts from those with nothing to contribute except bile. |

| It's much more active than when oakleif was posting here. As I understand it, open fights are very unpleasant to be around, personal attacks to retaliate for "spoiling" the forum are really what spoils the forum. |

| Where in that post is a personal insult? Nowhere, my friends. As I've said before, your input if valuable, and I am not on the offensive, and whether I agree with you or not, I'd be truly ignorant to use an ignore device. I never said I wanted to. I said what gives? You guys are pretty relentless on this. Why? Is it truly to "save" lives of people that might use an unproven herbal remedy? |

Glad you went back on old threads. If you'd gone back farther you'd seen an eric with with a nice personality. Than suddenly he changed and i just realized when he changed. He said it himself. It was when Spike sold out to ivillage. Spike would have booted eric off after the first one of his anti herbalist rants. Lucy too. Of course lucy brought little brendon over just to cause us trouble. I miss Spike too we sometimes carried on conversations. SO JUST WHAT ERICS AGENDA IS. I don't know unless he realized he could have some fun at everyone elses expense. I have noticed that there are some great threads going now that do not include eric and crony. Did you notice how many people jumped eric for being a rude crude bully. Oakleif gave em troubles too. She was trouble herself but at least she was for the forum and not against it. As someone put it Brendon was asking for a fight and oakleif gave it to him. But at any rate it is much better forum now that eric and company have quit posting so much. There are also more people posting now. I don't come here for info anymore. There are better places to go. but when i get e-mails abt this forum. I've just got to check it out. |

| Do you think you can copy in or link to one of Erics "Anti-Herbalism Rants"? As I see it the only time he does anything like ranting is when someone recommends a very dangerous product after solid resources indicating the danger. If you can't find any examples I'll just assume that you were just trying to insult Eric personally. |
