The product being spammed for in the previous post has several ingredients for which there's partial evidence of effectiveness in lowering harmful blood lipids. The best characterized of these is red yeast rice, which works to lower cholesterol in the same way as the prescription drug Mevacor - not surprising since they're chemically virtually identical - and some red yeast rice products have been taken off the market due to suspicions that they were actually adulterated with the drug Mevacor. Naturally, such drugs carry the same potential side effects as Mevacor - but the sellers aren't obligated to tell you that you need to have your liver functions checked and be aware of the potential for muscle problems. Physicians who prescribe statin drugs are aware of these potential side effects and watch out for them. What's also unknown is what happens when you combine a statin drug like red yeast rice with the other ingredients in "CholestProtect" - do they work well together, does the potential for side effects increase with a multi-agent drug? The seller isn't saying.

Yet another old thread dredged up but still no good advice on the original question. While much info can be found on an internet search I think it's wise to point out that many components of a healthy diet will also increase good cholesterol. Such foods as green leafy vegetables and other sources of soluble fiber, fish and omega 3 oils, and limiting red meats are some suggestions. I avoid trans fats and reduce saturated fats, use olive oil, nuts (no salt or added oils), drink red wine daily, and take calcium supplements. The usual suggestions of aerobic exercise, maintaining a normal weight, and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol consumption are also part of a healthy lifestyle and can improve HDL levels. For most people it's really not necessary to use pharmaceuticals to maintain healthy HDL levels. Abusing one's body and expecting drugs to "cure" the problem is not sensible. Also it doesn't work long term and is costly in many ways, not only financially.

Some good advice is given in the previous post. I'd revise one comment to read as follows: "For many people it's really not necessary to use pharmaceuticals or poorly studied and unproven "miracle" supplements to maintain healthy HDL levels." Of course, even if we all had sufficient willpower and could consistently follow good eating and exercise habits, many of us with unfortunate genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease would still benefit from drugs to lower detrimental blood lipids. And there are some drugs with long-term beneficial effects. What's important is to educate ourselves on what's been shown to work, and not to fall for slick advertising hype that's lacking in evidence.

Cholesterol levels are all a matter of the feedback system your liver has with your brain and what the rest of your body is doing. Bad cholesterol tends to be made in response to blood sugar spikes from poor dietary choices. Herbs that help your liver deal with these by protecting it, are: dandelion, hare's ear root, turmeric; there are others. A low sugar or low glycemic index diet helps the best that I know of to improve youe cholesterol ratios.

Regulation of cholesterol and other blood lipids is complex, but the key dietary factor is how much fat you take in - not sugars. Healthy diets from a cardiovascular standpoint include lots of fruits, vegetables and grains with attention to soluble fiber. More info on the role of good diet and exercise here.
