infestation of flying insects

The soil of my houseplants are full of little things and they fly in the air like gnats! They are fragile little things, but fast! They will get right in your face. they are driving us nuts. I have tried a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water in the soil, does no good. I have lured them with a little dishsoap in a dish of water. They continue to multiply I have tried bug spray around the plants and even in the rooms of my house, it's terrible, hate using that avenue. I have had suggestions but would like more. It is very cold here and taking t hem all out to a warm place to re-pot is not an option yet. I've never had this before. Help! I tried letting them dry out more and it does cut down on them but t hen they droop and need water. We are leaving for 3 weeks and need to water t hem good before I leave. Don't know what to do. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
