Trying to lose weight...

So, I'm trying to lose some weight. Wish me luck. I'm not very good with the whole willpower thing. Never have been. That's probably part of the reason I've always been fat. :-) Anyway, I'm trying the idea of eating small portions every three hours to see how it works out for me. From what I understand, it's supposed to help your metabolism and it also helps to keep you from being overly hungry when you do sit down to eat. I started on Monday and I've done really well so far. I eat around 7:30am, 10:30am, 1:30pm, 4:00pm, 6:30pm, and 9:30pm.

I'm also trying to drink a lot more water and have limited myself to two diet cokes per day. That may sound like a lot to some people, but it's a lot better than what I usually have and I know if I try to go cold turkey, I won't stick to it. I've also been taking the stairs intead of the elevators and using my treadmill at home.

I weighed myself Monday morning, and I'm not going to let myself step back on the scale until next Monday morning. I'll let you know how things go. :-)

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Hope you lose the pounds. Good luck!

I went to the doctor today and they insisted on weighing me. I HATE THAT! But actually, it was not as bad as I thought and I kindof knew that because I fit into my jeans-the ones that don't stretch!

When I lost a few pounds a while back I took the weigh everyday approach. Then I knew what would cause me to gain weight and the patterns of my weight fluctuations. But I am now in the stay away from the scale mode-bad...very bad!

Well I hope you get good news the next time you step on that dreaded scale!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Thanks, Toots! Yeah, don't you kind of hate it a little bit that almost all jeans these days have some stretch to them? It makes it harder to tell what size you really wear.

I LOST FIVE POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Trying to lose weight...

How do you find eating more smaller meals? I'd be afraid that I'd wind up eating more since I'd be eating more often. Do you feel fuller since you're eating more frequently? I'm just curious..... Obviously, it's working well for you.... :o)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Good for you Tisha, congrats!!!

I applaud & encourage your efforts in this (esp. since I have a bit of this problem msyelf).

From last Fall to this Spring I lost 20 lbs., largely thru this technique (small meals every 3 hrs. & lots of water), w/ no extra exercise at all. It really can affect the body in interesting ways, not just readjusting the metabolism, but just as importantly by leveling out the body's insulin level, in turn helping the whole body run better. Are you feeling more 'even-keeled' for lack of a better term? Maybe more consistent enrgey levels throught the day, rather than highs & lows? I did & found it much better.

If I recall right, you're not a big fan of veggies, but if you could try to eat more of them, like a cup at least, cooked w/ lunch & dinner. Also cut out the white foods like breads, pastas & white potatoes (if you haven't already). They have a higher glycemic index (turn to sugar faster), raising insulin levels, which in turn then drop, making one hungrier than need be.

If you're liking the results & the way you're feeling, I'd encourage you to check out the book my Michael Thurman called something like "Lose a Dress Size in 6 days). Warning, he's serious to only do his version for 6 days, maximum 10!!!. It requires lots of food shoppping & some serious cooking (& I'm sure, ditching the soda too).

But then again, your way's working, so maybe take a look at the book & find some compromise btwn the 2? Are you still doing the 10,000 step thing, (wasn't that you)?

Keep up your good work & very best of luck w/ this!!

(PG) Karen

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Lunamoon, I was afraid of that too, that I'd eat too much. But, I haven't. And I've stayed satisfied. I've only had one big craving - for some dark chocolate Ghirardelli that I got while I was in Vegas. I had to have Keith lock them in the gun safe, so I wouldn't be so tempted. LOL

I'm not sure I'm doing this "by the book" but what I'm doing works for me so far. The way I'm looking at it is, I'm having a smaller breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a healthy snack 3 hours after each of them. I am keeping a daily food and exercise journal. I'm also counting calories and fat grams, but not until the end of the day, just to see how much I'm eating. If I go a little over my goal, I'm not going to beat myself up about it. I've only ended up going over once though. And just by about 250 calories and 10 fat grams...and it was a Friday. lol

And, PG, I do feel a lot better. It's weird, but it feels like a weight lifted or something. It feels really good. I feel like I can really do this.

And thanks for the info about the book. I might have to look into it. :-)

OMG and I almost forgot...Congrats on your 20lbs!!!

:-D

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Tisha, congrats are in order for you! You have the desire to be healthier and you're taking GREAT steps to achieve your goal. I, too, have recently embarked upon a weight loss journey. I count calories, trying to stay within the 1,000 to 1,200 range each day. I walk the treadmill for at least 2 miles daily. I use a workout tape that combines cardio and weight-training 3 times per week. I'm also drinking at least 64 ozs of water per day. You have to drink at least half your body weight in water in order to lose weight. I'm working towards doing the 6 small meals a day thing. I bought healthy snacks- like fruit, rice cakes and Special-K breakfast bars. I bought a scale from Wal-mart for $5 and now I see why it only costs $5!!! When I "tested" it in the store, I weighed 160lbs. I knew that was wrong, should have been more! Then when I got it home, I weighed myself again. This time, I weighed 205lbs. I knew that was too much! Later that evening, I tried again and this time it was 175lbs! LOL, how funny is that? I'll go buy another scale next week- the digital kind! What kind of scale do you use?

Congrats, again, Tisha. We should start a weightloss challenge support club or something. Is that a bad idea?

GH

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I just use one of the old fashioned kinds of scales. I don't know. It's the one Keith had when I met him...7 years ago. lol It seems to be fairly accurate.

I've been drinking between 60 and 100 oz of water every day. As long as I have a bottle of water with each meal/snack, I do good.

GH, you've got mail (hopefully, if I did it right).

 o
Special K

P.S. I freaking LOVE those Special K Bars. What flavor(s) did you get? My favorite is the Vanilla Crisp, but the Chocolatey Drizzle is really good too.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Tisha- I go for the Strawberry ones or the mixed variety pkgs. I think they have like Blueberry, Vanilla and Strawberry in them. I'm going to have to try the chocolate kind. Do you eat yogurt? I like the Dannon Light and Fit. Vanilla and Strawberry/Banana. Yumm!! Okay, let me go check my email now.

Bye,
GH

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I've tried and tried and tried to make myself eat yogurt, but I have never found any that didn't leave a nasty aftertaste in my mouth.

I've been wanting to try some of the vanilla flavored ones they have out now though...so see if I like them better than the berry flavors. Pay day is Friday, so I just might have to give it another shot. :-D

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I am inspired by this post. I have managed to keep 20 pounds off for a couple of years...but I really want to wear pants with words on my butt-something a 56 year opld might have trouble with. I was thinking about creating a clothing line for older women that has some sort of words on the butt that would be atractive for older butts. A geometrical design of flattering words. And I don't mean attire that has a low waste and little pockets. But t...I have to lose a few more pounds to get my design line going. So thanks for this post!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

PMS can sabotage your progress! Late last night I had 11 oreo cookies!!! Ugh, I'm SO ashamed!!!!!!! I'll do two hours of excercise this morning. LOL

GH

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Don't sweat it too much GH. Sometimes we ALL need 11 Oreos. lol

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

And for those of us who hate Oreos, a 1/2 pint (minimum) of ice cream serves the same purpose. Especially on a late Saturday night, while reading the Sunday NY Times.

Really Toots, don't beat yourself up too hard, I suspect this happens to everybody.

I console myself w/ the fact that having lost the 20 lbs. I (1) am going into my 'change' at a lower weight & (2) have a greater margin for ice cream binges. Then again, that's part of how I gained back 6 lbs. since May ... sigh ...

Super stressful time, difficult boss, high-stress job, terminally ill Father ... sometimes there's just no better comfort than ice cream (not even plants, but it's a very rare day I'll feel that).

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Yes, Karen, I can relate to the stress factors. A stressful job and difficult boss are the main reasons I gained a lot of weight over the past few years. I'm no longer in that job and am now able to devote a significant amount of time to weight loss and just doing me, you know? My disposition is so much better now that I'm done with that job. Don't ever let anyone tell ya that managing people is easy. I'll never do it again!!! LOL

GH

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I admire all of you so much for your determination. I really find that excersizing regualrly makes me a happier and calmer person, better able to deal with all that stress! So it's a double benefit. One thing I wanted to say was: don't be too dependent on that scale. If you get on the scale every morning, and it's really going to affect what kind of day you have whether you lost or gained two pounds, just skip it! Rely on your clothes to tell you how you're progressing, and try to stick to weighing yourself once a week. You will be a lot less stressed about weight - and less stress means less ice cream.

Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so if you are excersizing and gaining muscle, your weight may increase slightly at first, but then drop, since the more muscle you have, the more fat you can burn. Even if you gain this weight initially, you will be trimmer, and your clothes will fit better, so LONG STORY SHORT (!) don't worry so much about the scale. Just feel your best! And good job all of you. You've inspired me.
-Sarah

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Sorry GH, I meant you, not Toots. Yeah, the stress stuff just sucks!

Fortunately, I just saw my Father last wk & all things considered he's adjusting well; not in pain or suffering, still feels he's got some quality of life left & he's not ready to check out for good just yet; somewhat of a relief to see all this. He's vastly improved from the time we learned of his terminal status last May & raced down to FLA to say goodbye ... sigh. He won't be recovering tho', congestive heart failure after 2 bypasses already: 1st at 49, the 2nd at 60 (he's 77+ now, so we know by rights, he could have died 25 yrs. ago).

Sarah makes some excellent points both abt the muscle vs. fat weight, judging more by fit of clothes & not being a slave to the scale. I use a very old scale, only a couple of times a wk, I have a large mirror near my kitchen & in Summer, was mostly in my undies (no A/C, top floor & west windows, HOT, HOT). As a result, I saw myself in undies most evenings & got very good at seeing that extra 3-5 lbs. right in my gut & correlating it w/ differences in how my trousers fit.

Next summer I may be able to go back to swimming laps several times a wk, which lowers me a whole size even w/out any loss of actual lbs., an amazing difference. Otherwise, tho' I didn't do much of it this summer, I ride a bike a lot, helps w/ both the exercise & stress relief. I ride around my neighborhood admiring the landscaping & invariably come home smiling & feeling better. When I'm in top form I ride at lot on the beach boardwalk nearby (a scant 3 miles each way) to the other end of this boardwalk, & the famous Coney Island. Hope to resume this riding next Fall. Am letting this post re-inspire me as well.

Tisha, thanks for yr. congrats to me & you're welcome abt the mention of the book. Also for starting this thread, seems a number of us are working on this issue & finding yr. example & this thread inspiring & encouraging. Keep it up Girl!!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Tisha~ For vanilla yogurt, my favorite is Stoneyfield's banilla (banana vanilla). It tastes like pudding. I gave some to DH and he didn't even realize that it was yogurt. :o)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Well, I got some of the generic Great Value stuff at Wal-Mart and it wasn't too bad. So, either it's ok, or my tastes are changing with old age. lol

I also got some plain fat free yogurt and cut up half a banana and a strawberry and put them into 1/4 cup of the yogurt and brought that as two of my snacks for the day. I hope it's good. :-)

Oh, and I had my weekly weigh-in this morning...

I LOST 2 MORE POUNDS! Woohoo!!!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Tisha, you GO GIRL!!! You are making fabulous progess- you have a lot to be proud for! Whoo hoo!!!!

GH

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Thanks GH. I am pretty proud. :-)

I really feel like I can stick with it this time.

Oh, and I had my first yogurt w/ strawberries and bananas. It was pretty good. I think tomorrow I'll leave out the strawberry though. Not quite sweet enough yet.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Woo Hoo! Congratulations on your weight loss, Tisha!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I finally remembered to bring the digital camera home from work yesterday and had Keith take my "before" pictures. God, they're awful. LOL I guess it'll make me feel even better about myself once I lose the weight, when I go back and compare the horrible pics to the "after" pics. :-)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I, too, have several of those awful "before" pictures that I would not share with ANYONE! I can't even stand to look at them!!! But, I can hardly wait to be able to show a fabulous "after" pic, along with that awful "before" pic. I'm thinking in about 5 months I should have enough weight loss to be proud of.:)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I've decided that I'm going to retake the pictures (in the same clothes) every 2 months. That way, when I (hopefully) get to my first goal weight in May, I'll have lots to show for it. :-)

Your clothes will be hanging off you! :)

I've started a regular work-out routine, too. I packed on about 15 extra pounds this summer, sitting on my butt recovering from that darn bunion surgery. And I was already 10-15 pounds above my ideal weight. By the end of the summer, I was tipping over into medically "overweight." But my friend Ginelle is a professional trainer, and she set me up with a routine that maximizes muscle-building and includes cardio that doesn't put stress on my foot.

I've never been a gym-person. In fact, I had never been to a gym before in my life (ten years in school, with free gym access all that time, and I'd never been to a gym - what a waste!). Before Ginelle set me up with a routine, I'd always done "activities exercises," never a set workout. But now, I LOVE GOING TO THE GYM! I thought I would hate the weight training, and love the cardio. Turns out I don't care much for cardio (but do it anyway, of course), but adore weight training. I go every Mon/Wed/Fri at 8:30, and find myself actually looking forward to it! Haven't started to lose weight yet (it's only been two weeks - Ginelle said I would start to see results after about three weeks), but I'm already much stronger, and have greater endurance. I also haven't lost any inches yet (except on my bust - but that fluctuates throughout the month, so I'm not convinced it's from the exercise). But even without any lost inches or pounds, my clothes fit better, which I think is probably because I'm holding myself differently.

At any rate, congrats, and I'm with you girl!!!

You know, your example my help your sister in law stick to her weight loss program, too. Maybe the two of you can work out together?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I hope so, but I'm not too hopeful. Sad to say.

And, I wish we could work out together, but she lives 2.5 hours away.

But, we took the stairmaster and the stationary bike to her (the one I got from Freecycle) on Friday. We'll see if she uses them.

I had my weekly weigh-in this morning though. I lost 1 more pounds!!! :-D

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Well, if she doesn't use the equipment, maybe she'll give them back to you. At least you'd have your own stairmaster and cycle :)

So how many pounds is that in total, Tisha? I guess I could go back through the thread and total them up, but I haven't finished my morning coffee yet :)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Yeah, she better.

It's 8 pounds so far...since the 18th of September.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Hiya Fishies,

How's that recovered foot doin' these days?

Can I venture a guess that your clothes are fitting btter, not 'cause you're holding yourself differently, but 'cause you're toning up the existing body (like tightening flesh into more muscle)?

I'd suggest this from my own experince. Yrs. ago, I was 17 when I taught myself to swim, a former trained swimmer explained the breathing to me & that's what I'd been missing. I slowing started swimming laps a couple of times a wk, adding a few more each wk. By end of that summer I hadn't lost a lb., but I dropped an entire clothing size.

Had the same thing happen in the late 80s when I started taking karate. Didn't lose weigh initially, but tightened up the body substantially. Built a lot of endurance & strength & I'm sure lost some lbs. too after a while. Dropped propbaly 2 sizes at least.

These days, I'm doing so-so, had taken off a few of the lbs. I'd regained, but went to Dad's & had a bit of ice cream every night.

Now back home in NYC, am cooking pretty well, & avoiding junk & sweets in the office, but finding am wanting to eat more meat than I've been supposed to lately. Like 4 oz instead of 2 per meal, which is what my program had beeen recommending. Tonite's weather is actually quite cool, nice cold draft coming in the windows. Making me nervous I'm gonna want to eat even more. The battle continues ...

Good news Tisha, bit by bit those lbs. add up, bet yr. clothes are getting loser. Use some of that exercise gear for me would ya??? ;>) Keep it up eveybody!!

Foot's doing good - still a (very little) bit swollen and stiff, but much better. I'm fitting into a slightly more varied selection of footwear, which is nice :)

But, no, I sadly haven't lost any inches. It has only been a few weeks, though. I think I've got to give it a ~bit~ longer.

Tisha - eight pounds in three weeks! Congratulations. That sounds like a lot. Is that a normal, healthy weight loss? I honestly have no idea.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Fishies, I appreciate the concern. :-)

From what I've read, when you have a lot to lose, a lot comes off at first, then slowly starts to taper off as you get down lower. The first 5lbs were probably at least half water-weight. Meaning, not all fat. One to three pounds per week seems to be pretty normal for someone my size.

It's now been almost a month (will be on the 18th) and as of this morning, I've lost a total of 12lbs (YEA! 4 more pounds... I have NO Idea how that happened! lol)

So, that averages out to 3lbs per week. Not too drastic, if you think of it that way. :-)

So, how are you doing with the diet + exercise business, Tisha? I'm so proud of you. I know you've been meaning to do this for a long time now.

I'm also proud of myself! I've finally started to notice a difference - quarter inches coming off in choice locations. Doesn't it feel GREAT?!?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

That's great fishies!

I'm doing ok with my diet & exercise combo. Although last week was a bit of a disaster in the exercise department. A migraine and exercise don't make good friends. :-)

But, I still lost 2lbs, so I'm happy. That's 14 total.

Well, I'll probably have a bunch of flappy flabby skin flying everywhere, but yeah... I'll totally be rockin' the grandma arm flab for sure! :-P

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

3 more pounds gone this week. That makes 17 total so far.

I wish I could start telling a difference. :-( On the 18th of November, I'll take my 2-month pictures. Maybe I'll be able to tell when I put them beside my "before" pictures.

Tisha you're sure to appreciate this. I've stolen it from the Hot Topics Conversation forum. All credit goes to vgkg:

In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the
Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red
vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God's great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and
Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?" And Man
said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it, add some
sprinkles." And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled.

And God created the healthful yogurt that Woman might keep the figure that
Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and
sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 6 to size
14.

So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island
Dressing, buttery croutons and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman
unfastened their belts following the repast.

God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in
which to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and
chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man gained more
weight and his cholesterol went through the roof.

God then created a light, fluffy white cake, named it "Angel Food Cake," and
said, "It is good." Satan then created chocolate cake and named it "Devil's
Food."

God then brought forth running shoes so that His children might lose those
extra pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so Man would not
have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried
before the flickering blue light and gained pounds.

Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with
nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy
center into chips and deep-fried them. And Man gained pounds. God then gave
lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his
appetite. And Satan created McDonald's and its 99-cent double cheeseburger.
Then said, "You want fries with that?" And Man replied, "Yes! And super size
them!" And Satan said, "It is good." And Man went into cardiac arrest. God
sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.

Then Satan created HMOs.

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Good for you Tisha,

So I'm guessing you can see a bit of diff. in the way your clothes fit by now, no?

After 19 lbs. I should think so (when I lost that much, my clothes fit quite diff. esp. in the gut & the butt). Next time you clothes shop, you'll probably be at least a size smaller (if not 2), keep it up & congrats!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Congratulations! 19 pounds is wonderful, Tisha!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Hi everyone. Well, the past couple of weeks I haven't done so great. I haven't done SO bad either, but not as good as I would have liked. I'm finally down 2 more pounds... this makes 21 in all. I took my 2 month pictures yesterday and I think I can actually tell a bit of difference now. I still don't notice much difference about the way my clothes fit, but I guess maybe they were just a lot tighter beforehand than I realized.

ANYWAY, I am not going to post the pictures directly on this page, but I'll post a link to where you can see them. I warn you, I'm wearing shorts, a tank top, no makeup, and my hair is a wreck in both sets. LOL So, if you dare, take a look at the link below.

"A bit of difference"?!? Tisha! That is a huge difference! You look like you've lost about four or five inches around your waist alone! I can definitely see a difference on your face and waist, as you say, but also a big difference in your arms, thighs, and butt - even your ankles are noticeably thinner.

You are doing fantastic. Are you working out as well as dieting? Because if so, that could account for the lower weight loss over the past few weeks. Because, honey, you may not be losing pounds, but you are REALLY making those inches run for cover.

I've been losing steadily at about a pound per week. But I'm putting on muscle like a mad woman, so I think the amount of fat I'm losing is a bit higher than the pound/week suggests. I've only lost about an inch on average, though. But then again, it's only been five weeks. So I guess I'm doing pretty good. I would like to lose about 3 or 4 more inches before moving to a maintenance program. I've been upping my weights consistently, and have more than doubled what I'm lifting. I find the muscle tone in my arms and back in particular is really noticeable.

Hey! So what's the story with your sister-in-law? Is she making good use of the stationary bike?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Thanks! :-D

When I do work out, I use the treadmill and I also do that Denise Austin Daily Workout that they show on Lifetime in the mornings. But, between migraines and just feeling crummy, I haven't worked out like I should, here lately.

I plan to fix that situation in the very near future though. :-)

SIL... well, I have no idea. I haven't asked, because I kind of figure she isn't and I just don't feel like getting mad right now. LOL I know she's not using the stairmaster, but I dind't figure she would anyway, she has a bad knee.

I missed a day at the gym this week, and chowed down on chocolate cheese cake - and more than once. My waistline was unimpressed.

But I am getting *really* strong. I went to the gym yesterday afternoon, and was lifting more than some of the guys there - albeit not much more, but still, more. It's a totally different crowd on Saturday afternoons.

I am Super Shelly.

RE: Surprising Weight Loss!

I can just picture Super Shelley, lifting, breathing, stretching & putting those boys to shame at the gym ... sighing w/ envy.

I, on the other hand have a mighty strange report to make: got on the scale this morning & I lost 1 lb over Thanksgiving -- how's that for bizarre!!!

I didn't go hog-wild or anything over Thanksgiving (served fabulous pork chops by special request); ate a bit more than usual, had a few sweets, but basically kept on w/ eating small portions every 3-4 hrs. & drinking lots of water. When I saw that on the scale this morning I burst out laughing ... who'd a thunk it??? So I've now lost 5 of the 6 lbs. I'd gained back, woo-hoo, this is 1 lb. less than I weighed in 1980!! & I just turned 50 in August!!

So Tisha, keep it going, we're on a roll & you too Shelly the Mighty (thx for yr. recent EM abt Ooojenn)!

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Well, things are going pretty well... especially considering all the food that's everywhere because of the holidays.

I'm at 212 right now. So, that's 23lbs total that I've lost. Pretty good, IMO. Because, I am eating candy and stuff, but I'm managing to keep it pretty controlled. So, I'm proud of that. And I think the fact that I haven't gained any (even though I've only lost about 3lbs in the past few weeks) is a good thing! Yay!

How's everyone else doing these days?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Hey Tisha,

That's not pretty good, that's GREAT! Given holidays, goodies everwhere, keeping it controlled seems to me to be the name of the game here.

I've put back 2 lbs. since end Nov., but it seems to go up & down weekly; am aiming for control & moderation myself (only way to go, yesterday in my office, appeared out of nowhere an extraordinary coffee cake & the candy jar, which I am usually pretty good at ignoring has been filled w/ Choc. (or the new Choc. & PB) Hershey kisses). Just how much control can a person be expected to have ... sigh ... Choc. kisses are a serious fave of mine (& combine that w/ PB, yikes, that's really tempting the fates).

Anyway, keep up the good work & other than my fall off the wagon yesterday, I'm doing pretty well myself!

Next ---

That's fantastic Tisha! PG, I think it's inevitable that you'll fall off the wagon periodically. The important thing is that you get back on. I'm slowly plugging away at it, too. Although now that it's end of term and things are getting hectic, I've been skipping the gym more and more.

That's why I'm up at 7AM to get my email "stuff" out of the way - so I have time to make it to the gym :)

Ya' know, you guys are an inspiration!

I can't recommend my latest diet strategy, which is getting 16 teeth pulled at once. I DID loose a significant amount of weight, and have managed to keep it off.

But, hey, Tisha. YOU, my girl, have done Magnificently Well, and I hope that family members (and Keith) have noticed just how MUCH work you've been putting in!

I struggle mightily with the water issue. I've recently gone back to work full time, lost my computer, rebuilt my computer, had a few other bits & pieces challenges, no life-changing ones, but the stories I've read here girdle my loins for the new year. I get my full denture set in a few days (I hope) and I can say, that things like this and a tricky gag reflex, and continual things in your mouth all the time really DO affect your appetite.

I have greater hope for my New Year. I thank YOU, Tisha, for this effort, and bringing it to the fore of my consciousness. This is an important part of my 'adulthood'. I hope every one else is have such a great time, doing the measuring thing, and keeping track.

I ended up in the ER June before this, and had to learn all over about Diabetes, how to treat, how to eat, how to administer. Who knew, after 20 years being insulin dependent, that I really had no training, no clue, and things ahd changed SO MUCH!

So, how about it for the Skinny-With-In Girls, and their recent changes. I'm sorry, I don't qualify. Even though I lost weight, the latest visit shows me up in poundage.

Did I mention I've been working full time, for a company I love and am hoping that will buy out my temp contract? Nope, but I am.

Thanks ladies, for going to all this effort, sharing, and the truthfulness of it all. I know, on another forum, when I posted my weight, even though I was still losing, it was an intimidating situation. My posted weight is more than you stated when you started out, Tisha. So, no, you are never alone, no matter what you are doing.

Thanks for the commraderie! Keep up the Good Work!

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Just wanting to congratulate everyone on their weight loss---claps from the peanut gallery!! While I have never had problems with my weight before, my husband and I have just hit our mid-thirties. Now all-out WAR must be declared before our waist-lines get out of hand (and it seems eating anything other than celery causes poundage like never before). So I thought I'd share one of the cutest poems I've found about dieting----hope you enjoy:

***********

God then gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his

Oh my goodness---the poem I posted is already on this thread! How crazy is that----guess it's a small, small world. Sorry to put you through it twice. Do keep up the good work though!!

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Tisha~ How's the weight loss going???

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I wish I would've checked out this thread when I first saw it. Maybe I wasn't ready. But looking in the mirror makes me sad & want to be ready.

I love the My Virtual Model to see what I might look like to others. No wonder they think I weigh less. It's my height & build, & possibly hair style & length that throws them off.

I'm going to give walking/running a try & this time keep up with measuring my foods & keeping a journal. I lose patience too fast.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Not much. Especially not this summer. All of the house buying stuff took over and with the whole "no food in the house because we haven't taken the time to go to the grocery store yet" eating out, I'd say I've done good to not gain a million pounds. LOL

Thanks for asking though. Maybe someday I'll get back with the program.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Does stress prevent or make you guys eat more?
Since I had the problem with my son, starting last Nov, I have lost over 30 lbs..At first it wasn't bad but now I'm terrified. I cannot eat. I wish I was a bit overweight and dieting, trying to lose it. I won't even get on the scale anymore..I weighed myself last Tues, and found I lost another four lbs..That ruined my day..
My vise is smoking..If there was a way to even cut back I would..Is anyone here a smoker? Tried or have quit?
If so, what did you do?
I'm thinking smoking and eating are two disorders we all try to overcome, but it's not easy.
My friend eats more when she's stressed..I don't understand how she does it..she'll munch on an entire roast at one sitting..she's 5'0 and almost 300 lbs. She talks about losing wt, even tells me to yell at her while we're talking on the phone and she starts talking about food. But if I say anything, she gets pissed off. So, I've learned to keep my mouth shut.
What do we do? Toni

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Well, I'm down 30 lbs since June 12th, when I also quit smoking. I did it by starting out at doing cardio & weights 5 days a week but went to 3 when 5 started burning me out, & counting calories & weighing/measuring food as well as getting in 8 if not 12 8-oz glasses of water a day.

The hardest part has been the last 2-3 weeks when hubby came back from Iraq. When he's around, I eat like him. He's constantly snacking, & he eats heavy whether at home or at a restaurant. I think in the 20 yrs we've been together, he's gained 20 lbs. GRRR I think I gained that in our first 2 months together! DOUBLE GRRR

I have a bit more to go than what I've lost. I'll then see if that's where I want to be.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Congrats LibbyLiz! That's awesome!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Tisha,

I shoulda knocked on wood because I've been stuck on a plateau since posting! WAAAH

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Toni, emotional eating has always been a problem for me. I ate when I was stressed, sad, anxious, mad, happy, pre-menstrual. Whatever. I ate big portions, too. I slowly packed on 30 pounds over the course of 3 years. I just got tired of being sick and tired of looking at myself like that. I joined WeightWatchers on October 19th and to date have lost about 9 pounds. Besides the weight loss, my energy level is picking up and I feel so much better about myself. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I should have lost about 10 more pounds by the end of the year, so I'm really looking forward to that! Going into the new year 20 pounds lighter- yeah!!!!!

It's something about the way women handle stress that causes us to tip to either of the spectrum: eating too much or eating too little. Toni- try to drink Ensure or something similar until you get your appetite back. You don't want to get sick from not getting enough nutrients.

Tisha- try changing your exercise routine. Your body has probably gotten used to being worked a certain way and refuses to cooperate any longer. Shock your body by doing something completely different. It will work, promise.

Happy Thanksgiving All!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I've been taking the Dr Max Powers Burn for two years now. It was recommended by my doctor after I stopped smoking and gained quite a bit of weight.

I lost 60 pounds but also dieted vigorously and exercised regularly at the gym on the treadmill for 35 minutes. Also, not only fried chicken and fried food have fat. Any kind of red meat has fat content. Rule of thumb for me is if calories from fat are high, I take a pill with the meal. This Dr Max Burn is a lifesaver but it only works with diet and exercise.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Hey I actually lost 50 LBS at this weight loss clinic in dunwoody ga and now it is a new year. I am trying to find others out there looking to lose more weight and keep each other motivated. Thanks

Kim, that's awesome! You've got a great attitude!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Thanks, purpleinopp! Im trying to get fine for this summer! LOL

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

You can do it! Do you garden outside also? I'm realizing the past week how out of shape I'd become the past few months. The activities of trying to straighten/maintain the yard, and get back to decorating with annuals, new propagations, moving the house plants around and repotting, has been a great crash-course, as usual, in fitness. Anyone who has the opportunity, get out there and do some serious gardening!

Gardening also keeps my mind off reaching for my comfort food, usually ice-cream and chocolates, when I am stressed. And you are right Purpleinopp, the lifting and moving of pots is another good form of exercise. But when I hit a weight plateau, I reach for Prescopodene. Its very effective in curbing my appetite and boosting my metabolism without any nasty side effect.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Advertising of ANY KIND is both prohibited & unwelcome here & will likely be removed.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I don't know that anyone was necessarily attempting to plug a product so much as relate an experience...but Karen makes a solid point.

People have tried to be sneaky and promote their businesses here at GW before and were promptly banned.

It would be a pity to lose privilege on accident. ...Still one can't be too surprised when a weight loss product is mentioned on a thread about losing weight...not too sure where to draw the line.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Did you note the day the person joined; appears they only joined to plug the product?

I'm skeptical, if it were an individual simply wishing to share, they could have relayed the experience w/out the product name & suggested anyone wanting further info. can email 'em privately.

Ex: On my thread above abt having quit tobacco, that's just what I did. Tho' not plugging any products, I left it as, anyone wishing support in that endeavor, feel free to contact me.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

And here I thought you did that on willpower alone! ;)

Hmmm...didn't look at the time they joined when I'd posted last...that is pretty suspicious all right.

Speaking of plugs,Karen you wouldn't mind putting in your two cents on the "less controversial" video? I wouldn't expect comment on the other "video" thread...seems it' s a bit too dark(even if I don't think so)to bother a gardener's gentle disposition.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone even comes in here.

...Glad to see you though! :)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

"And here I thought you did that on willpower alone! ;)"

I DID do it on will power alone (5.5 yrs. now!!!); unclear what/why you're teasing me.

Not sure I want to even look -- I haven't looked at either the 'controversial' one or not.

Few if any folks come here it seems to me -- can you tell how quiet & bored it must be at my job for me to have sauntered in here?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Didn't mean to pick on you Karen...was just being playful. :)

The less controversial one is a clip of an unusual dolphin from south america...I don't know....maybe you'd be less bored if you watched it. :D

Either way I'm glad you popped in(I'm bored too lol). :)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

OK to tease, no problem (but let nothing interfere w/ my HUGE pride in having stopped smoking cold turkey after 42 yrs!!!)

I watched abt 2 min. of it & wondered if perhaps it needed audio, which I can't turn on here.

I will say, nice swimming dolphin; looks like he's chillin'. Tho' the site's in Spanish, I grew up in Brazil & as such am a tad familiar with The Amazon; at least enough to know it has some AMAZING things in it (including apparently, fresh water dolphins).

Will check it at home in case the audio's worth hearing.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Nahhhhh the audio is just music so you didn't miss anything.

You had mentioned in another post having the ability to speak portuguese which of course led me to wonder whether you'd picked it up in the old country or the new world, and although I have no issue with portugal(heck..never been there!),I'm excited to find(what I kinda suspected)that you didn't just live there for a year or two but in fact GREW UP there!

OMG like...a million questions...BUT,..I don't know if Tisha's thread is the place to have that chat...we are WAY off topic here(even for the "off topic" corner of HP! lol).

If it's okay with you,we can resume the conversation on the post with the video.

See ya there! :)

 o
RE: Dolphin Video/Speaking Portuguese...

Tisha seems to be gone from here a couple of yrs. now, so likely she wouldn't mind our conversing on her thread here.

Ask away:

the Intro is this, yes I grew up in Brazil (toddlerhood to age 10) & that's how/why I speak Portuguese. Portugal was the colonial parent country to Brazil & it's a situation parallel to that of the UK being colonial parent of the USA & thereby the place of origin of our language as well.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

By the way,..congrats on STILL not smoking. I vaguely recall you posting about it somewhere...probably here now that I think about it. I myself have quit for brief periods of time but nothing like you have accomplished.

Really impressive!

So Tisha wouldn't mind us using her thread for our own purpose?...Yaknow..I believe that...she always was pretty easygoing when I think about it. I guess she doesn't come here anymore huh? seems like you are one of the few survivors left hanging on since the old days. What the heck happened? Is anyone else around that I'm just not seeing?

So many previously CORE members gone!
At this rate I'd be hard pressed to recall their names.

We'll get to the Brazil stuff in a minute...right now I value your perspective and opinions concerning why the heck everyone left.

 o
And speaking of leaving...

Please tell me you're just in lurker mode and that you didn't go to disney. :(

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Not really lurking, was just finding it (1) too unpleasant to stay & (2) other than that, not a lot going on there (Houseplants or C&S).

That Thanks Meyer Mike thread (the one that got problematic) has devolved into personal shopping plants btwn 3 people, I can't see any reason that's on thread, rather than private EM except newbie Rosey doesn't know any better.

I'd started to write you a note abt 'MrL's comments & for you not to be hurt by them for me. But when he got on to make personal attacks on me AFTER I apologized, I reported him. Personal attacks are not OK.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I'm just happy you are still here. :)

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Well thanks AITG, I DO appreciate you saying so.

But tell me pls. (I'm very curious), what do you think I did that was so bad, bad enough to get me banned?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I remember the days before ivillage and seem to recall spike being a bit overzealous about moderation(and even now you can google his name and see what ex GW people have to say about him...It's not pretty. Anyway I'm not really sure if the style of moderation has changed so when you went quiet the next day I feared the worst.

I've seen people banned here for some pretty dumb stuff. :/

From one person's perspective it could be construed that in saying that it is "sad" to promote weakness in females, what you were actually saying was the OP's position was "sad" and that therefore the OP herself was "sad". May seem like a bit of a jump but I bet many would react defensively when told that their behavior was "sad". IDK just thinkin outside the box a little is all and only trying to help...after all...you asked. ;)

 o
By the way

When I say that I've seen people banned for dumb reasons I might just be speaking from personal experience.

At the risk of drawing unnecessary attention to myself....do I seem familiar to you Karen?

 o
Kind of creeped out now

Do I know you under another name? I HAD felt at ease & quite comfortable w/ you until now.

Noticed how very spare your Member Page is.

I wondered after writing if you'd feel free to speak openly while on GW. About the misbehaviors, it wasn't me doing the screaming in block caps, posting emoticons that took up whole pages & throwing tantrums & hissyfits, oh & trying to order people around.

 o

RE: Trying to lose weight...

Awww Tisha, Cena, Fishies.. I miss them all! I was super active and I remember both you, AITG, and PG. But you may not remember me :) I wish I knew where some of the old members went. I know where some are-- others seem to have dropped off the map.

Well, hmm, weight loss. I need to go running and do some weight training again. I just love cake too much and keep gaining!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Nice to hear from you Julianna (I think I remember your name), but those others folks are gone for years now. Just Cena once in a blue moon shows up at Hoya Forum.

Maybe Julianna, you could clear up the mystery of who Asleep in the Garden is.

He likes to asks lots of questions but rarely answers questions asked of him. When I answer his Qs, then he's off to the next questions; frustrating & sometimes makes wonder just what is it he thinks he has to hide?

Do you recall his posting under a different name? He's alluded to such but won't actually say. Perplexing.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

If I know, time has removed that memory from me. I looked at some of my old posts, and I call him Asleep back then too in 2005. So not sure! I wasn't very active on the conversational side of things until 2004/2005, so I missed a lot. I also wasn't part of the original Garden Party group, so some of those things escaped me.

I do know there was a bunch of people who were Disneyed at some point, and several of them showed up in off-GW reunion sites like Delphi... but I don't recognize Asleep from there :) Sorry!

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Well thanks for trying. I'm not familiar w/ Delphi or reunion sites.

Some folks went to a particular other place, but I didn't care for it so have stayed here. I do 4 Plant Forums & the Quilt Forum too.

Still a pretty cool place.

So ... what'ya been doin'?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Ahh. Several people formed a new Garden Party, but it was spelled with an "ay" at the end at Delphi :)

I didn't know you quilted! I kind of got into it last year and started making several. Right now I've stopped piecing quilts and decided I am gathering pretty vintage sheets of floral designs and doing whole cloth quilts in addition to some other fabrics.

I'm working on my doctorate now. We're possibly moving to Jordan this next summer. So I've been working on collecting all the plants I want to bring. Got permission to import them :)

Are you still doing a lot of house plants?

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Hi again Jullianna,

So I tried logging into Garden Partay, but I couldn't find any active plant discussions, humph.

Yes, I quilt, long time now (my Member Page lists my blog addy if you wish to take a look at my work). I've never done whole cloth quilts, but usually find them, quite interesting to view.

Good luck on your doctorate (may I ask the topic). Importing plants to Jordan, that sounds impressive. Special plants I'd assume. Do you speak Arabic?

I take it AR is Arkansas? What kind of plants might be worth taking to Jordan (fascinating idea).

Yes, I still do lots of plants, mostly succulents & Hoyas & Sans.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Yes, I haven't been there in a while and I think a lot of people have since split off there as well.

I just peaked at your blog-- wonderful work! You mention that you worked as a color forecaster. What is that? I've been on the fringes of interest in fabrics and I often notice that I don't find what I want-- color or pattern-wise, but sometimes I can wait 2 years or so and the things I like start to show up. Kind of annoying though lol. Other times, stuff I like was only run for a short while and I think it should have gone on longer. I guess my tastes are out of step with the market.

I'm getting a doctorate in Heritage Studies which is sort of an interdisciplinary Anthropology/English/History degree. I'm looking at preppers/survivalists who prep for heritage reasons.

LOL well the plants may not be that special, but I have some heirloom plants like my Schlumbergera x buckleyii that my great-grandmother moved from Germany, and other things like AVs, Begonias, as well as cacti and succulents that I can finally set free. The market over there is limited, and so it's hard to say what will be able to be found. I don't speak a whole lot of Arabic, perhaps enough to get into trouble. The area my husband's village is in is by the Galil.

AR is Arkansas :)

Succulents are the best! I have one hoya and 3 sans, but I like them a lot. I've noticed I seem to like things that either have interesting blooms, blue/green or lavender colors (like echeverias or graptopetalums, etc), or big leaves.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Gosh I miss the old days. I don't come here often anymore because I don't really have houseplants anymore (just a couple of Hoyas I keep out in the sunroom) and spend most of my online time on Facebook now. I also just had my first baby (Valerie) in July. :-) So she keeps me busy. But I miss it hear a lot. And I think of everyone often. A while back, I managed to find Teresa (the one who had the little girl, Celeste, who was disabled) on MySpace. But that was a long long time ago. I often wonder how Celeste is doing. I'm so very sad to hear about Nigella's passing. Larry_b messaged me and let me know. I'm so thankful to him for that.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Tisha!! I am so glad to see you here! I often wonder about Teresa and Celeste as well along with everyone else!

I didn't know Nigella had passed away! I am kind of shocked? I haven't opened up the forums in a month though, so I probably missed an obvious announcement. So sad.

 o
RE: Sorry to hear of the loss of your friend

Hi Tisha, Julianna,

Sorry to hear of the death of your friend, I can't seem to place or remember the name (Margaret or Nigella).

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I think she was more into the yard gardening than house plants iirc.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

Margaret was from Mobile, AL. There, yard gardens have the same plants that we have in our homes. She was definitely into what we all here refer to as houseplants.

Larry

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I remember Nigella/Margaret. Her zone was "steamy" something, right? If I'm remembering correctly, she quit in a snit when ivillage posted something about owning any pictures posted on GW. I hated to see her go. She seemed to live in a tropical paradise of foliage (note my zone) and shared it with us, via pics. Sorry to hear of her passing.

And I remember all of you, except julianna, but I haven't been around this forum in years so probably just timing.

Nice to see you all here.

 o
RE: Trying to lose weight...

I was on GW from 1999-the iVillage changeover, then again from 2004 or so-2007-- at least fairly regularly. Then I think that I've been on and off here and there ever since.
