Ideas please-colourful houseplants

g'day,
I am in a marvelous new apartment....
I have a ground floor bay window (with awning) facing north.
I want to grow beauty! I bought some cheap spiderplants that aren't doing well at all....the plants' fault, not mine of course LOL ! I want to replace these with something colourful like bougainvillea. Will this work I am in London, Ontario???where the window areas can be quite coolish in the winters.
Ideas please. I have room for 3 hanging plants and standard/potted ones also. I am going to buy a double-flowered hibiscus standard in the spring when available.
What else should I look for?
