The first Gardenia of 2008

This is a follow up of my post: [images] My Gardenia is setting buds (Oct 27, North Virginia) which is posted on Sat, Oct 27, 07 at 20:09. Unfortunately, this post might has been deleted (or a technical error.)

The small plants continue to develop a ton of new buds over winter. Around Christmas, they are loaded with buds of all ages. I move one in my hot and dry bedroom. She shows no symptom of stress. The first flower opened shortly after the new year.

Do you remember their fragrance? My bedroom is filled with this elegant scent for almost 2 weeks now. It brings pure joy. Oh, Gardenia my love.

Here are some images:

Looks beautiful! I've always wanted to grow one but from all that I've read, I'd never be able to provide the necessary growing conditions.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

That is one very healthy, and Gorgeous gardenia, snasxs!! Must be delicious with the scent filling the room!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

That's one happy Gardenia you've got there, congrats! That 2nd photo is something to see!! I can practically smell it from here!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Congratulations! It's stunning!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Below is the same young plant in October last year:

This is the detail of a new born bud last year.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Oh that is a beauty. I have to pick one up as soon as I see some healthy ones in the stores. What fertilizer are you using?

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

I use Azalea, Camellia, Rhododendron Acid Fertilizer from Wal-Mart. It is a green powder (very cheap). I mix the fertilizer with tap water; and apply with every watering. This product is not the little beads (slow releasing one) which I mix into soil when changing pot - once every several years.

Other than this, bright light and correct watering are crucial. To begin with, a soil-humidity meter ($10 from WM) helps a lot. Do not water the plant until it reads "quite dry" all over the pot.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Thanks for that information. I have both acid plant food (powder) and one of those meters. All I need is the gardenia now. :)

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

I never have any Gardenia blooming this early in the season with the exception of Golden Gardenia which starts blooming in Oct-Dec. I did notice this one and only bud on one of the bushes.

And a pleasant visitor on another.

None of the others are even starting to bud yet.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Haha, it is great to know - as I have claimed, this is the first Gardenia of 2008 ;-)

With a lovely hummingbird, it appears that ankraras’ plant is outside. Judging by the climate of Las Vegas, I guess you have coolness in late December? It is different in Nova. We have rains and cool days in October. Because everyone says how difficult these are, I never expect these to bloom. Personally, I find these not particularly hard to keep. Their surreally shining leaves have already conquered me … then, they did just that - These showed buds in mid-October. I still remember the joyful surprise that day. Now, they are literally "loaded with buds"; and one pristine flower has since opened. The wafting fragrance is pleasantly sweet, elegant and wild.

ankraras, as far as I could remember, you are into succulents? I might remember the wrong person. What is Supannee? Also, would you share a full-shot of your plants?

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi snasxs,

Your gardenia is just beautiful, really healthy with dark green leaves. You are definitely doing the right thing for your plant. What variety is your gardenia? Thanks for sharing your pics.

I recently (a month or so ago) purchased my first, second and third gardenia. I have two Miami Supreme, one potted, one planted in the ground and one Dwarf Radicans (potted).
So far it is doing well, and hoping to get blooms this spring. Doing my best to keep the green leaves from yellowing. Appreciate you sharing your watering, fertilizing program. I really want these plants to do well. I will be checking back for more progress.

Nice plant ankraras!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

puglvr1 ;- Thanks for the nice comment.

snasxs;- Here is a pic of the plant.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

puglvr1, it is a veitchii.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

OOoooooooh....nice ones!! I'll take pics of mine later (I always procrastinate)

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

snasxs
Beautiful!!! I can almost smell the fragrance..........
I love gardenias, but have no luck with them indoors.
I do have a Chuck Hayes (a few years old now) planted in the back yard that blooms in the summer.
To have one bloom indoors at this time of year must be heaven!!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Yes, it is a wonderful experience - the elegant fragrance fills your house and wafts into your sweet dream. A girl who drove me home the other day asked: "What is your gorgeous plant in the window?" I told her it was Gardenia. She said she never saw one for real. Hehe.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

You've inspired me to try a Gardenia again. Did you get yours locally or order from Logees?

I attempted a hardy gardenia one year and another indoor variety neither of which lasted long. Might be my mindset as I am used to growing plumeria and bananas. I'll have to read more posts on gardenia to up my chances of survival.

Any problems with spider mites? That seems to be my worst enemy for tropicals indoors during the winter months. I too live in N. VA so our growing conditions are the same.

If only the internet could share the smells of Gardenia. Looking forward to more updates and photos.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Dpolson, When my Mom remembers, she waters her plants everyday. When she is busy, she forgets them for a few months. So she keeps buying and killing all her plants.

If you are not experienced with house plants, you might start with Jade plant, wax begonia and Jasmine. After you know how to keep these, gardenia is not all that difficult. Gardenia veitchii easily sets a large number of buds. Mine blooms all the way to next summer. To control pest, I use "mite/insect spray for house plants". They sell these at Wal-Mart and Lowes all the time. It is cheap but efficient. I have no pest throughout winter.

I bought the original plant in New York. It was blooming; so I knew what I was getting.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

snasxs, Went to Home Depot tonight and there they were, gardenias in bloom. I'm going to jump right in and get one. I am in the middle of pampering plumeria, adenium, and hibiscus seeds so it would be a nice change of pace taking care of a plant instead of waiting for seeds to sprout.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Which HD did you go? I know one in Reston, VA. If you give me an address, I would go have a look. I am interested in cultivars of First Love and Miami Supreme.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

7710 Richmond Hwy (Route 1) South of the beltway.
Alexandria, VA 22306

I ended up getting the 4 inch potted gardenia for $6. They also had the larger size for $12 and those were the ones that were flowering. However, my smaller one has plenty of buds so I'll keep my fingers crossed that they actually open.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Dave, your email is received. Thank you. Your gardenia is the same type as mine. Congratulations on your new purchase. Would you post some pictures? Please let me know if any situation occurs. New gardenia from Green house is stressed. Be careful with it.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi snasxs,

I know it has been a while since this thread was active, but I just stumbled upon it and being quite the novice with gardenias wondered how long you keep up fertilizing with each watering? This isn't continuous is it? I bought my first gardenia a year ago, it had tons of buds, which one by one wilted and fell off. Then I had a few spider mite infestations. I presently seem to have a pretty healthy looking plant, it has replaced much of the foliage that fell off previously. I have no buds now, but it looks healthy. So, back to my original question, you said you fertilized every watering, but do you stop this at any point? Thanks.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Mudrnner, I never stop fertilizing at half-strength.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi snasxs
I hope you can help me with my gardenia.
I have a gardenia 2 feet tall in a large plant container.
I have a moisture meter and I will like to know how far should i put the meter in the soil to get the right moisture reading?.
my gardenia leaves are turning yellow and I think i may have over water it please help me save this gardenia
Thank you
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Stick the meter into the center of the pot. If the reading is wet or very wet and the leaves are drying, it might suggest a root rot situation. If it is only a couple leaves yellowing, it is quite normal.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi snasxs
Thanks for the advice
I check the moisture meter today
in the center it reads 5 and i check another part of the soil and it reports 8. I will wait another few days to water it
it has some yellow leaves that fall off from time to time.
I would like to post some pictures of the plant. please let me know
how I can post them on here
Thank you
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Cool81,

If your meter comes from WM, then I would not water for readings 5-8. Gardenia indeed tolerates readings 2-3. I water when the pot is 2-4.5 throughout.

If you don’t know how to post pictures, you can email them to me. You can click "My Page" and then "send me an email". I will post the pictures for you.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Gardenia leaves turn yellow from time to time as the plant decides keep the leaf there costs energy that would otherwise be used expanding the size of the plant. Don't feel too bad about single yellowing leaves that drop off from time to time if the nearby ones are very healthy.

Your picture is way to small for a detailed analysis, but judging from the color, it might be suffering from a little chlorosis (failure of chlorophyll production or repair).

Make *dead* sure that every single fertilizer feed you ever give the plant is acidic. Miracid or other Azalea fertilizer certainly works. Coffee ground might do the trick, but haven't tried that - snasxs would more likely know if it works.

About overwatering - it's actually hard to overwater a gardenia if the drainage is a good as it should be. Think cactus soil (ok, nothing like orchid bark, but cactus soil would be in the right direction).

I'm posting a link to the most important article I ever read about plants, horticulture, botany, and gardening. Tapla's soil thread :)

Here is a link that might be useful: A Soil Discussion. Long but surprisingly readable.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi Richie,

Your gardenia is very pretty, from the picture I don't see a lot of yellowing leaves, but it might be hard to see. What type of soil do you have it in?

I agree with Erict, make sure you have a fast draining soil. Overwatering and not draining properly or staying too wet for long periods of time will often lead to root rot. If you have the time read(the post he listed above) its very long, but full of great information on container growing and container soil mix. I have my potted gardenias in Al's mix and I just love it. Occasional yellow leaves are very common as long as the majority of the leaves are dark green and healthy with new growths you should not worry about the few yellow leaves. I feed mine with miracid every two weeks according to the package directions and every 4-5 weeks I add chelated iron to keep the leaves dark green. My gardenias prefer morning sun and afternoon shade(FL). I keep my gardenia watered well, moist soil(not Wet). With the mix I am using I water this time of year every 2 days unless we get rain. In the winter 3-4 days. Everyones growing area, temps, humidity is different so this is not set in stone. Just guidelines for this type of soil that I'm using...

Good luck with your gardenia!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
where can I find al's mix?
I'm using miracle gro potting soil and i check the ph it reports 5.0.
I live in tampa fl.
I got to take a closer picture to show the yellow leaves
it use to happen from time to time
now I'm worry it can get worst like everyday leave lost.
maybe I need to drill bigger holes at the botton of the container as it looks like they are to small for the water to drain fast
I did read the link and I think I got good draining soil
This plant was transplanted 3 weeks ago so not sure if it has settle in yet
I wish I could tell if it needs water just by the feel of the soil cause I got a new meter today cost $16 now i check with the new meter I stick it in the center of the container about 3 inchs down it reports 5 but feels dry oh
boy I'm confuse about this meter thing lol
I hope can stop the trouble with it cause my girlfriend loves this plant and I want her to be happy
where can I get chelated iron? this is what
I think i need for it. from what I heard the tap water here is not good for gardenias
its acting up a little bit
Thank you in advance
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie, if you really live in Tampa FL, then you should not worry at all. Gardenias are easy plants in your region.

The problems we are talking about are in the cold/alkaline north – say Minnesota, New York, etc.

I would not worry at all.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi snasxs
when you feed the gardenia at half-strength is this every 7 days or 14 days?
I think I just have to get use to using the moisture meter
your gardenias are very pretty
as far as meters go i will keep using it and water when it reads 3 or 4.5 on it.
Thank you
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi Richie,

Al's mix can be found by searching in the Container Forum under Al(tapla) Soil Mix. But if you use cactus soil, you can add 30-40% perlite, you can also add some fir bark, or pine bark(used for orchids)it would help a lot in draining well.I got chelated iron at H.depot, you can get it at Lowe's. You can use the one that is labeled Chelated Palm Nutritional/Chelated Citrus Nutritional. Both works well for correcting yellowing leaves. Just follow the directions on the bottle. Any fert. that says good for azaleas, camelias (acid loving plants) will work, follow the directions on the pkg. I use mine every two weeks, as per recommendation. I also have a water meter, sometimes it doesn't work properly. I have heard that it can sometimes give a false reading, when you fertilize. If you go to the search box, type in "Watering and Moisture Meter Questions", read the post written by (Tapla)Al, he explains it very well. I will post a couple of pics of my gardenia later that is planted in Al's potting mix. My computer is acting up with downloading pics...Hope this can be of some help to you.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
I when to lowes and got the plant food and got chelated iron in the from of liquid iron has 4.50% next time I go to lowes I will see if they brough back the
Chelated Palm Nutritional next week.
until then I hope iron helps.
I'm looking forward to see your gardenia pictures and I will feed my gardenias every 2 weeks.
snasxs: Thanks for your advice.
so far today I see the plant is a little better atleast no new yellow leaves.
lets see tomorrow lol.
Thanks
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi Richie, here is a couple of pics of my Miami Supreme gardenia...I have one in the ground also. I am fairly new to gardenias myself, but wanted to share with you what has worked for me. I have gotten a lot of great advise on this forum. Just follow the directions on the bottle of the iron, don't add any more than is recommended. Even a little less is better than too much. Keep us posted and good luck...

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi puglvr1
those gardenias are pretty
one question what size pot is it in?
may be mine is in to big of a pot?
I will keep everyone posted on how it recovers.
tomorrow I will feed it iron
I think I will give it iron once a month and feed it every 14 days with the acid plant food it needs.
Good news I do see 3 tiny flower buds
I think my gardenia may need more sun
it only gets 1 and half hours of sun and the rest of the day it gets bright light in a shade are
Take care
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Thanks Richie, I have it in a 10" Azalea Clay Pot, another reason why I water every couple of days if it doesn't rain. Clay pots dries out a lot quicker than plastic. After summer I might repot to a plastic pot so I don't have to water as often...maybe go a little bigger size also. From your pic, your pot seems the right size.
Good luck and congrats on the new buds...

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Thanks puglvr1
I just read about the moisture meter on google and I wonder now when i check it if the readings are correct lol.
I think i will water it when the first inch or 2 of soil starts to feel on the dry side.
when the gardenia blooms I will take a picture of it.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

The moisture meter is reliable for me. I do not observe significant error after fertilization. The error should be less than 0.1 reading. The meter from WM is for potted plants. For garden soil, there is larger equipment.

It might be okay in Florida to water your gardenia in ground when "the first inch or 2 of soil starts to feel on the dry side". For a potted Gardenia, "Water when the top 2 inches feel dry" is a classical false-instruction. "Keeping the soil evenly moist" is, in fact, the key to kill a healthy plant.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi snasxs
I will try to get the hang of using this holds all moisture meter I got from wal-mart. I just stick the meter in 3 inches down and see what it reads when I see it at 4.5 to 5 this is when I water it
while it was in a smaller pot now that its in this bigger pot i got to get the hang of
when to water it.
In the past I would wait to water until 3 or 4 days have pass but I notice that sometimes many green leaves fall of the plant.
my girlfriend told me she use a insect control from bayer.
I think this may be what damage the gardenia a little.
the good news I see more new leaves growing on up top but the bad news is I lost many lower branches.
well as it recovers it should get new branches
Thanks
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

From time to time, I wait until the young twigs slightly wilt before I water my Gardenia. I never lose any leaf or buds this way. In my observation, "losing leaves" are exclusively caused by over-watering, fertilizer-burn and/or pests. The leaf-spray never causes yellowing or "losing leaves".

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie, I used the Bayer insecticide on my gardenia and it works GREAT. I have not had any aphids or mealies on it since. It did get an infestation a few weeks after I bought it. The Bayer that I used is recommended for OUTDOOR CONTAINERS, I don't use it on any of my indoor plants. If your girlfriend used it according to directions, I wouldn't worry about it. If the water meter works for you, then you should use it. All I was saying was for me it wasn't accurate all the time. There were times when I just watered it, and stuck the meter in and it read "dry". Sometimes it wasn't consistent for me.There are a lot of people that use it and swears by it...

Good luck!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi snasxs
Hi puglvr1
Snasxs how can I tell if this is a insect problem?
When it recovers I will use the bayer for container plants.
my girlfriend used 3 table spoons on the this larger container. this is a 12 gallon
Container but the info for this bayer does not show much to use on a 12 gallon container.
puglvr1: this is my first time using one of these meters and so far it works for my small plants but i dont think its taking the right reading on large containers.
In the event my girlfriend used to much of this bayer insect control how can
I help it to recover from the shock?
Thank you all for the help so far as this
plant is getting new leaves and still gets yellow leaves but it is started to slow down in the yellow leaves problem.
Thanks
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi Richie,

Which Bayer did she use? If she used a 12 month formula, you shouldn't use it again for at least one year... I posted a link below on the Bayer that I used that is recommended for outdoor container plants (Once a year application )The recommendation for the one I used would have been (3+1/3 Tablespoon) for a 10 Gal. container, so you are fine since she used 3 Tablespoons, assuming you used this one. Just let it do its thing and let it dry out a bit. I have also used these on plants that don't have any bugs but are next to plants that have been infected. I use it to "prevent" them from getting it. I like it since its once a year application...I use it on most of my flowering and tropical plants(Non -Edibles).

My gardenia is in very fast draining soil, that is why I water so often. If your soil is not this porous, it will take a while for your soil to dry out...If your soil is mostly peat, Snasxs is right you shouldn't have it moist all the time, let it dry out a little bit top(few inches) before watering again.

Let it recover from the things that you have put in, hopefully you will get some blooms...

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Puglvr1,

I have a problem myself. The top leaves are eaten by some bugs. They sometimes eat a half to the whole leaf. But the insects do not stay on the Gardenia. So I don’t know what bugs they are, or when the leaves were eaten. I killed a green cricket-like bug the other day. I also have very destructive squirrels around messing with my plants.

What meter do you have? Can you upload a picture? Lol. If your meter reads "dry" after you just watered it, you need a replacement. The meter is obviously broken. Could it have something to do with your pugs?

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Snasxs, yes I think my Pug must have been chewing on my water meter, LOL...as you can see by the picture, I caught him red-handed, LOL... I think it might be because of the potting mix I am using, turface, pine bark, silica sand. I just don't think W.meter works well with that type of mix? It is just the run of the mill water meter from the big box store, paid around $5-$6 for it.It's fine since I now I just use a wood dowel to test the soil. I just stick a thin 1/4" thick and pull it out to see if the soil is moist or dry. This was a great suggestion from a very reputable member here. Its been working fine, so for now I will stick with that.

Do you think you have some caterpillars or snails eating your leaves? I have noticed them on my papaya tree, ate most of the leaves off last year. There must have been 10-12 of them on the leaves. I have also seen snails eating my Poinsettia leaves. Hope you figure out what kind of bugs you are dealing with? Good luck...

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi snasxs
Hi puglvr1
lol your dog re minds me of my dog when she was a puppy she ate my stereo speaker wire I had to replace it lol.
The bayer my girlfriend use is the same one as the one you use.
I have a rapitest moisture meter as well as a holds all meter they seem to work with small pots but not as much with big pots. is the acid food from miracle gro good or is the wal-mart brand better?
my miralce gro soil does have peat in it
lol my grandmother told me if I use one table spoon of distilled while vinegar in a gallon of water and water the gardenia
with it once a month that the leaves will stop turning yellow does anyone know if this is true?
I never heard of this before lol
Thanks
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hey Richie,

Glad she used that Bayer. Sounds like she used close to the right amount. Miracle gro or Walmart brand is probably about the same, WM will be cheaper...any brand that says for acid loving plants should work. About the vinegar thing I attached a link from the Container forum that might be useful in explaining what it is used for. I think it has more to do with lowering the PH from your tap water?

Here is a link that might be useful: Vinegar on Tap Water

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi puglvr1
I Think I will just cut down on watering to every 3 or 4 days.
the i going to give acid food every 2 weeks. then 2 weeks later iron then back the food and see if it gets happy lol.does this sound like a good idea?
The store also told me the same thing that you all told me. to use the food plus iron and cutting back the water sould bring it back to being happy again.
now on a sad note my girlfriend broke a 1 inch Breach it was a new two sided brance.
I also when out and got 1 more gardenia plant another mystery.
so far i got 1 gardenia aimee first love that seems a bit stress when I got it home. 2 gardenia mistery.
and 2 Gardenia veitchii and one other gardenia not sure what type it is the pot has not name tag on it.
Take Care and thanks for the link
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Cutting down on your watering sounds like a good idea, don't add too much iron, every two weeks might be a bit much iron. Just follow the directions on the bottle. The miracid every two weeks is fine, that's the directions on mine. I trimmed a few braches of my gardenias that didn't have any buds on it.

Wow, six gardenias, sounds like your really like them...they are very pretty plants, especially when they are nice, healthy and blooming. Enjoy them!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
yes I love gardenia they remind me of when my girlfriend and I first met at a high school dance and how special she is to me.

anyways how was your day snasxs?
how was your day puglvr1?

Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie, do you have surge protector/UPS? These protect electronics by filtering out voltage spikes.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi snasxs
I just brought 8 surge protectors today.
My friend put in a new power supply on the damage computer now it is working like new and I install the power outlet that was also damage by the storm.
I wish I has these surge protector/UPS before this happen.
It would have same me from the damage.
How was your day?
how is your gardenia?
Take Care

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Thanks
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hmm, the plant should not react this quickly. It is not a pug. So, wait a month before commenting … if you are bored in between, you can post some pictures of you, your family, kids, grand kids, etc, and of course, larger pictures of your gardenia.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi snasxs
I know its not a pug but after taking the bad leaves off it only had 1 bad leave since. the new leaves where growing before the iron. I'm just saying that the iron seems to have done something good cause before this was added it was 3 or 4 bad leaves per day. in a month I will report the full report on it as far as pictures I will post some new gardenia pictures and some pictures of my two dogs
soon.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi Richie,

Glad things are improving on your gardenias...Sorry haven't posted in a while, went to TN on a family reunion, small town with horriblei internet connections. Barely got a signal and thought would just wait till I got home.

snasxs, glad you liked the picture, lol...

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi puglvr1
how did your family reunion go?
from what I notice is that if it is very hot outside then I will need to give the gardenia water every 2 days if the weather is cooler then every 3 to 4 days. if I wait to long leaves fall off cause of the gardenia getting way to dry. I will post pictures of the gardenia on monday and of my 2 pet dogs angel and candy.
if all keeps going good with the gardenia then I will place it on a every 14 day feeding and every 4 to 5 weeks add extar iron.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Thanks for asking Richie, had a wonderful time. Weather was excellent. Cooler nights than what we have in FL. We didn't get any rain at all except a sprinkle according to my rain guage, so all of my plants were very dry when I got home. Spent a couple of hours watering everything.

Looking forward to pics of your dogs...

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Nice dogs Richie, very cute! Your dog Angel looks like a dog I had about 12 years ago, chihuahua(sp?) mix. Thanks for the pics...

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
angel is a sheperd boxer mix
this dog does funny things like chasing her tail even tho shes 4 and half years old. I though only baby dogs do that lol
one question when you feed your gardenia do you use 1 table spoon per gallon of water or half a table spoon I want to keep it well fed so it keep looking good.
Thank you
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie, On my container the directions says to use 1 tablespoon per gallon of water every two weeks, check your box and see if it says the same thing. If you want to use it once a week, you can use (1/4 to 1/2 table) per gallon. It better to use a little less than too much, so you don't get a salt fertilizer build-up. Once in a while flush out the soil by watering it till the water drains out of the pot, so the excess salt gets flushed out.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
Thanks for the advice
I will feed it every 7days until it recovers 100% then I will go back to feeding it every 2 weeks.
so far it has had a few bad leaves here and there but it is not as bad as before.
on the bright side it keeps on getting more flower buds. none of the other ones have any at this time expect this one.
I will post a new picture of the gardenia as soon as my new camera arrives.
take care
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi puglvr1
I used the same bayer for the other gardenias. I like how it works.
when these insects try to eat or drink the sap of the leaves they dye.
Well I notice that snasxs was right it was to soon to clam the gardenia was better today i notice yellow leaves again/
This is my game plan first feed every 2 weeks and use the 1 table spoon of distilled white vinegar in a gallon of water to keep the soil's ph in check.
I will have a new gardenia picture tomorrow.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Looks beautiful Richie...you're doing a great job!! Don't worry too much when you get some yellow leaves, Mine seems pretty healthy, and has blooms right now, but I still get a few yellow leaves here and there. I am pretty sure yellow leaves are normal with gardenias. When new growths appear, the old leaves are replaced. As long as the overall tree is healthy and bug free, don't worry about the few yellow leaves. Its a normal occurence on my gardenias...

Thanks for the pics

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
You welcome.
when it blooms I will send a picture
of the gardenia
Thank you puglvr1
I agree with you about the yellow leaves. I see new leaves growing
and I hope that the 1 small bare branch recovers some leaves.
I am doing my best to keep the bugs off. so far so good.
I'm watering it about 2 times a week.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

one more question is using destill water better then using tap water?
I heard tap water can cause problems with gardenias. i heard this from another garden center that I visited today
Thanks
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie,

The link I posted below should be very helpful about your question. Hope it helps...

Here is a link that might be useful: Using Distilled Water on Plants

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi puglvr1
Thanks for the link
I think I am just going to let the water sit the day before watering the gardenia.
by then it should be 98% clear of thoses harmful items that can hurt these plants.
well I think I might get to see some gardenias blooming soon. I'm still getting yellow leaves. I think i will move it into more sun light. right now it gets 1 hour so I think if it gets 2 or 3 hours of morning sun this should fix it.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Ok today I lost a gardenia branch.
can someone tell if I should change the soil from miracle grow to perfect mix?
or how often should I water so far this is a 2 cubic feet planer it is in and i think may be the soil is staying to wet.
Thank you
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
can you help me with the question I posted
and you say you use a wood dove. where can I get one of them
Hope to hear from you soon
Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie - the same question over? Many posts ago, I have said:

From time to time, I wait until the young twigs slightly wilt before I water my Gardenia. I never lose any leaf or bud this way.

In my observation, "losing leaves" are exclusively caused by over-watering, fertilizer-burn and/or pests.

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi snasxs
Ok since I think it was over water I'm letting it dry out until I see leaves slightly wilt.
sorry to get the same question over.
I forgot I asked that question before.
I know it is not insect pest.
It is very well fed. I feed it sometimes at half-strength.
and other times every 2 weeks.
I am going to brave it out by letting it dry out some.
Thank you
Richie
P.S. it is getting good size buds.
if it is ok I will like to post pictures when they open

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

my girlfriend should got this Liguid iron plus it has 0.50 magensim and %5.00 iron.
puglvr1: check it out it might be a good answer to keeping the gardenia healthy
Let me know what you think

Richie

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie,

If your soil is staying wet too long, you can repot it to a more draining soil, but that could cause you lose your buds...Just let it dry out a little more between waterings and then maybe after all the flowers bloom you can repot it by adding more perlite and add some pine bark(orchid mix) to your miracle grow soil. I don't use that soil, because it is mostly peat. Remember I use Al(tapla) soil mix.

By the way thanks for the Liquid iron info, right now I use chelated iron, probably similar to what you bought...

Good luck!

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
Thanks for the info on the soil now that i know it has peat in it i will have to cut down the watering.
Your weclome I think liquid iron and liquid iron plus both are good when my liquid iron is finished I will use the liquid iron plus.
it also has manesium in it.
so still on the feed it liquid iron every 4 to 5 weeks and feed it every two weeks
with the plant food change the watering to every 3 or 4 days.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Update I see a gardenia bud starting to bloom when it is done blooming i will post it. bad news I found what looks to be like some white filys or mealy bugs.
It has bayer 12 month trees and shrub protect and feed on it already.
should I use any bayer sprays on the leaves in order to try to rid it of these bugs? I have cut down on the watering so far it is day 3 and no water. meter reads 7 moist when i put it in 3 inches down.
we happy that we got a blooming gardenia flower that is a good sign.
I want to say thanks to you
puglvr1,snasxs and everyone else who has help us.
if where not for you all I dont think this plant would be alive today.

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Richie, that is so BEAUTIFUL!! See, you worried too much, it looks like you are doing a great job!! I wouldn't spray Bayer on the leaves, you already applied it to the soil. I wouldn't add anymore. If you see some more bugs on the soil, I would get a small spray bottle, add a little dish soap,(appx 1/2 teaspoon) to 16 oz. water, shake well and spray them. .Make sure you do this early morning( in the shade) NOT in the sun. Spray the bugs, let it dry before you put it back in the sun. You can rinse the soap off the plants later if you want before you put back in the sun...

The wood dowel that I mentioned on the above post can be purchased at Home depot or Lowes, get one that's 1/4" thick or similar. Stick the wood dowel in the soil halfway down, when you pull it out and the soil is wet, don't water...till the soil comes out ALMOST DRY.

Thanks for posting those beautiful pictures...

 o
RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

you weclome puglvr1 and thank you for the advice
I'm trying hard to keep it alive and so far it has reward me with a flower.
I when to lowes and got the wood dowel 1/4" thick.
now I will test with the wood dowel and water when needed
I think the leaves that it lost will be replaced with time.
as long as it is flowering I think it is a good sign

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

hi puglvr1
I use wood chips on the gardenias soil to
keep the roots cool. I also found out that
with this on the soil It will need less water so instead of watering every 3 or 4 days may be it can hold out longer between waterings.
I just wish that I did not lose so many branches.
before I found this site I lost 6 branches.
still look full and I hope to keep it that way.
I found what looks to be like a shell of a bug.
it was suck on the branch so I pull it off and threw it in the trash.
Take care
Richie

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Hi puglvr1
ok so far so good no yellow leaves today but a ver bare braches tho. I feed most of the gardenias today.
I feed them again in 2 weeks. as far as the big mystery gardenia I will feed it like snasxs does every seven days cause today my cousin who works at a garden shop told me this gardenia in need of a lot of food.
I was only feeding once a month before I came to this group
I think it might be hungry.
The wood dovel works great so far the gardenia is good to go no need for water

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

I think its ok but will wait until a few days has pass to know for sure.
the big gardenia is a little on the going down hill side.
8 bad leaves today.
what i know for sure is I tested with the wood dowel and moisture is ok
but i notice its not getting enough sun so I move it to another place that gets more sun.
hope this helps.
i think its going to bloom another flower.
I will keep you posted

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

Wow , I have been wanting to read this popst for a while.. I have been just to busy! Now that I did...Very helpful information for all!! Thanks alot all.
Thanks for your experience richie! Hope your denias do well. I would love to see more pictures! Give your denias alot more light if you can. You might find them no yellow leaves at all after a while.
snasxs, great advice on watering and feeding. I will definately take your words to heart. Your Gardenias are beautiful. Don't you hate having to repeat yourself..lol. You definatley know how to treat a gardenia. You make it look alot easier than some of the post on hear seem to want us to beleive...;-). Thanks for the watering tip!
And
puglvr1, That wooden dowel suggestion is the best. I use one all the time. It works so great in the mix I use..Al's mixes. You are full of wealth too.
This is a very helpful post, and I hope everyone here can take away alot from it. This would be the only post one has to read to do well at denias thanks to snasxs for even starting it!
Thankyou all!!

Someday soon, I will post mine. I keep putting it off too...:-). I now have 4 in 4 inch containers, 2 in 12 inch , and 2 in 10 inch containers..Almost as many gardenias now as my citrus,,,lol.
I have "Miami Supreme, August beauty, and some from Thailand. One flowers yellow!! Nice looking
I would like to add one thing though to this post. I have found that the longer I keep my grow lights on, and the more sun they get, the less yellow leaves I get. But if I try to save money and give less light, or if it is cloudy for a few days, I seem to get some yellow leaves more frequent even though the watering is perfect. So now I just keep the lights on all day, and no yellow leaves, and the flowers open alot better. You could get a tan under my lights...lol

RE: The first Gardenia of 2008

I understand you all want to know how the pictured plant looks now. Here is the story:
I placed the Gardenia in a large window next to my front door. In mid-January, I was drinking wine and listening to the cds left by my ex-girlfriend. When it played La Vie en Rose, someone knocked on my door. It was an elegant old-lady called Tammy. She wore a nice female-suit which contrasted her shiny silver hair. When talking about Gardenia, lights came into her eyes. She said she loved Gardenia because she remembered the gift from her husband. However, she never had any success with Gardenia. I have a couple more Gardenia. So I offered my plant to her. Joy came to her eyes. After she smelled the open blooms, she could not release the pot from her arms. She insisted to give me $20 for the small pot in the picture. I remembered that I gave her the instructions from my experiences. I saw her drove away in white snow. Then I passed out on the couch. When I woke up, I realized that I forgot to ask for her address. But I hope the plant brought joy to the old lady.

Now I moved back to zone 5. My Gardenia plants show no sign of any bud at this time.
