Looks like a brazil philodendron to me. If you ever want to trade a piece or two in the spring or accept a sasbe for a few pieces please let me know. I have been looking for one for a while now.

That is a variegated heart leaf philodendron. It is a climber or trailing vine. They are quite easy to keep and are quite fast growing. They also tolerate quite a bit of shade for a houseplant. Any care questions?

I live in a small studio apartment. How big of a problem is it if I sleep in the same room as the plant?

You won't have a problem. It is easy to train the vines as it gets bigger. And if it gets too big, you can always prune the vines shorter. The cuttings will root really easy so you can give away a bunch of baby plants!

what about insects? how do I avoid them?

This species is pretty insect free. You may have occasional spider mites, but you can easily avoid and treat it by heavily misting the plant regularly to maintain humidity. Any other questions?
