Strange Spider Plant Behavior

Hello everyone! I'm new to this site! I love my house plants and I hate to see them suffer! That's why I'm very concerned about my 3 spider plants. All of them have perished!! They sat outside all summer and thrived! They even flowered! I brought them in for the winter (I'm in zone 6a) and they started to turn yellow, and then brown, on the leaf tips. I tried misting them, changing their position in my apartment, and I use distilled water, but my efforts did nothing. All of the plants have turned completely brown. HOWEVER, two of the plants did something I have never seen before; they spouted new plants from the actual root system, rather than the vines they normally sprout. One of these new little plants appear to be getting the yellow/brown tips already. The other seems to be doing okay. Any idea what is going on here? I've had these plants for many years and I'm very disappointed they've met this fate.
