You deserve bragging rights, ninecrow. Draven looks great!

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Red is a colour we all seem to enjoy. With continued research, the staid reds and yellows of these plants might be joined by other vibrant hues.

Its certainly not unusual to have still a poinsettia into February, March, April...and maybe get it outside in the warm sunshine while still bearing some color.
But, we put the colour aside when we decide to keep it going out of doors. We cut it back to about 4" or so and give it the best sun we can.

Most --99% maybe, do not though entertain thoughts of trying to bring it back to its former glory by giving it the treatment necessary. The 12 - 16 hour of darkness, followed by the remaining light hours...every day.
Still, poinsettia makes for a fine small plant and even when it doesn't turn colour, it is appreciated for continued growing.

I Do Light Control on Draven Every Year....
I Still Can't Get it that I've Been doing it for SIX Years

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Very nice! I had a loveley surprise when I returned from visting my son in Texas for the birth of my Grand daughter in December, I live in northern Illinois and my two year old Poinsettia was in bloom as well, I have never had one bloom again always stayed green, I did nothing special other than leave it in the south window all year long.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

ninecrow, lots of people keep their poinsettias year after year, but few of them look as good as yours. I forget....have you made cuttings for new plants when you prune Draven every year?

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Thanks Rhizo
Yes I Do.... But they get given away to Family

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Fantastic ninecrow!! It is very satisfying to bring these to color year after year! You have done a great job with Draven! [I'm on year 4 with one of mine] I recieved a very pretty Marble Star christmas 2008, and hope to keep it going.
Great Growing!!

Draven looks great!

I purchased a Marble Star this past Christmas, and except for the middle buds (blooms?) drying up and falling off, it still looks good, actually better then when it was stuffed in amongst it's buddies in the store.

I had some fairly large seed pods developing, and entertained the thought of letting them mature, then changed my thinking to "let's see if I can grow this through the summer and talk it into changing colour for me this coming winter", so I picked them off. I'm thinking fertilization may have occurred when they were all stuffed together on the shelves and getting moved around? Precocious bunch of poinsettias!

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

I must ask Ninecrow, do you have a life from September through Christmas? To suggest you bring along a poinsettia to its former colored bracts, does suggest you are a slave to the plant.
By understanding what is necessary to bring about such return of the plant in colour....when all the experts--and the non-experts, tell us IT CANT BE DONE.
We accept that and grow on the plant in its green and appreciate the plant for itself.

It might prove interesting if Ninecrow were to explain what her routine is to bring about such color...year after year.

The others who confirm such is being reached--that the plant has again coloured up, year after year, I believe
they believe in the tooth fairy.

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

I'm sorry that you haven't had the opportunity to enjoy the poinsettia experience, jeannie. Perhaps it's because, in your climate, you don't have enough year 'round light to maintain healthy, prospering poinsettias.

But bringing this plant to full color on an annual basis is not difficult, not a mystery, and not a chore. It does take some knowledge of plant health care and of the poinsettia's daylight/darkness requirements.

We've enjoyed seeing 'Draven' for years, and I will expect that we will do so for many more.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

jeannie7,
You might want to do some reading up...
ninecrow has been doing this (and having awesome success at it) for years now:
Anybody still got their Poinsettia 08?
Poinsettia Update
Poinsettia update Part 2

There are many more threads on it, but I'm sure you know how to do a search.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Oh, and by the way, mine color up every year without any special care where I am.
Granted, they look like crap this year because I didn't bother to cut them back as severly as I should have in the spring.
Prune and repot, stick outside in summer, back inside in a south window before first frost and voila. So, I can't figure out why you think it's some kind of magic or that one has to be a slave to this plant.
Might be something you'd like to experiment with and prove for yourself. They make beautiful summer plants, too.
:)

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Hello, all you point lovers!,
Nine, I don't have a clue how this MS got seeds. Perhaps its like kioni says, they snuggled in the store lol! regardless, I'm not going to try for any seeds, just going to pamper my plant , and then be a slave to it LOL! in all seriousness thou, Jeannie, I consider covering my point up everynight, like brushing teeth. [I use a black plastic bag,and just toss it over] Same as in the morning. I have to turn the plant lights on anyways, so I remove the bag so the plant gets light till night.
It IS rewarding to bring your own plant back, year after year, like ninecrows and many others have.
no worrys, and Happy growing everyone!

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Did I tell you guys about when I was in college and we grew a greenhouse full of poinsettias to sell for our Hort. Club?

The whole batch didn't color up! We were horrified! The whole Va. Tech community always bought thousands of plants from us every year!

We were assured that the graduate student who was in charge of the black-out shades had been steadfast in his job. He was (as were we all) totally in the dark (sorry for the pun) about what had happened.

Come to find out, the grad student was the scoundrel after all! He had rambled though the poinsettia greenhouse for a few nights early on in the dark treatment WITH A FLASHLIGHT!

That idiot was trying catch several night blooming cereus in full display.

Well, the bracts began to color up nicely early in February. We had so much fun with our new marketing ploy: 'Nothing says "I love you" like a Valentine Poinsettia!' 'Give that Special Someone something they won't forget.'
'One time only! Get your Valentine Poinsettia while they last!'

As I recall, we sold out. I still remember seeing pretty pots of points in all of the offices and classrooms in the middle of February! tee hee

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Hi Ninecrow,

Draven is still looking good for 6 years old!! Congratulations on a great job, year after year.
I have two that I have been re-blooming since
Dec '06...this year it still has some red bracts,
not as nice as last Christmas...it got some cold damage this year(unseasonably cold winter for us). I live in Fl, so I don't do much with it. I place it under a Palm tree where it gets diffused sunlight and when Oct comes around the palm leaves keeps it nice and dark at night(even from the full moon), and by Dec...its red again.

So it can be done, there are several different ways to do it. It just depends on what and how you choose your method.

Beetle, nice pointsettia...Love the color on that one!
really have to do much to get it to rebloom. I put
it under a palm tree most of the year. It gets

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Let's see, must have been around '95 when I started with my oldest poinsettia so that would make it about 13 years old. Since then I've had as many as six but I'm down to three now. When I would display them in front of a south window they would last into March, but they get less light in the livingroom now and I had to cut two of them back last week. The last one needs to get the same treatment.

One needn't be a slave to them to do this.

My seed starting area of my basement didn't get any use from Fall to Feb so it is the perfect spot. Put the plants on the floor, lower the lights according to plant height, surround them with cardboard from a water heater and a refrigerator, set the timer for 10 hours on, 14 hours off, and water as needed. Photoperiodism satisfied. Me too.

13 Years Old *WHOOOT* What Colour is He/She and Do you have any Photos to Share?

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

The eldest is a cream color and has been cut back already, of the other two (about 4-5 yrs old) one is pink and cream and the other is red with white dots. I'll see if a good enough pic of the one not yet cut back (pink and cream) can be had and get a pic of the stump of the eldest. I (again) forgot my last cut-back of the summer last year (around early to mid July) and the eldest got quite gangly (4+ ft) this year.

Hey Nine Draven looks great! My new marbled I bought last year is now coloring up WITHOUT dark treatment! Late but coloring up!

Photos tomorrow if I remember!

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Interesting tommyr. So it was in a room that would sometimes (or all the time) have lights on at night? I'd be game for this for next year, I wouldn't bother with covering if it was going to color up on it's own, after Christmas. I can wait.

Thanks, can't wait to see the photos.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Here as promised is a photo:

Poinsettia

 o
Surprised at color up!

Kioni,
The room is dark at night but the plant is in a west window with a street light about 80 feet away. There is a big rhodie outside the window blocking MOST of that streetlight. Apparently it just takes a lot longer for them to color up if some light is present. I was surprised to say the least when it started coloring up!

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Thanks much for answering tommyr. I was debating whether to start a new post "tommyr, I'm waiting for pictures!", since I know a few times I've posted on the bottom of a lengthy post, then wanted to go back and check on it in a few days, and forgot which post and which forum! Not saying that would be you, of course, but I appreciate you answering. I would like to do the dark treatment like ninecrow and some others, and now I know there is room for messing up - I thought there'd be NO colouring up at all if it got a peek of light duing it's treatment.

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Draven is GORGEOUS ninecrow.

I've always wanted a Poinsettia but I have no luck with bringing flowering plants back after they've finished their display. I'm so afraid that I'd kill it. But I want one so bad. *Tear*

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Ooh, that last pic was gorgeous. The color is so neat!

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Hi again.

Ninecrow, does Draven get outdoor time during the summer, or is he strictly an 'indoor' Point?

Also, for those who have mentioned their points summering outside until first frost, does this mean their points can handle temps dipping below the 50F that some poinsettia websites seem to caution against? If that is the case, then that would sure shorten the amount of time mine can be outside for the summer.

Thanks.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

kioni, that's a good question.
You know, I've always summered mine outdoors
and never really paid attention all that much.
They go out right after last frost, the same time as I
plant peppers in the garden, first/second week of June or
so, and back in with the rest of the houseplants when it
just seems 'right' before first frost.

They get ridiculous growth all summer and don't lose it
when they come in, and I know it must be going below
50.

I haven't lost a point or other plant yet, but that doesn't
mean that my luck won't run out one of these years.
Probably not wise to try it.

Hmmm...I'll certainly remember to pay more attention and
take notes this year!

You Still got the Seed Pods on Yours Beetle?????

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

My points have seen temps below 50F (10C), certainly, but not much below 40F (4.5C). Around Labor Day I move them from being sunk in the garden to a screened porch until about the third week of September and then into the house. Our average first frost date is about Oct 2.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Hello everyone,

My points are still looking 'not bad' for the season. When does everyone normally cut them back and how far down do you go? Also, what size pots does everyone have their points in? Mine always seems to need repotting. Can you root prune to keep it at a manageable size?

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

sorry Nine, I'm feeling kinda dense this morning [its my Monday lol] Hope you have a seed pod, but I'm sure whatever it is, is exciteing! no, that seed pod of mine, got thrown away, and nothing this year really took. Happy Growing!

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

I am a newbie at poinsettia regrowing. I have never tried it. However, last Christmas I got this beautiful large Ecke Burgandy and thought that I would check the gardenweb. Was I in for a surprise? I would like to commend all of you, for your beautiful points. I would especially like to thank ninecrow and Draven. I have never been so inspired, and informed on poinsettias. This has been such an education and I am so grateful for all the information. I have two red ones also from Christmas '08 and thanks to ninecrow and all the rest of you, they are still alive. I am so movtivated to keep them going. Ninecrow, you are such an inspiration. Thank you so very much. Now, I have a question, how do I go about uploading pictures to this forum? Thanks in advance.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Hi point lvrs! Nine, you don't have far to go, mine I think took about a month from the green stage. Good luck lizanne1, glad you joined in the fun!!

Lizanne, Welcome and good luck with your Poinsettia!!

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Thank you, Beetle and Puglvr. I remember seeing both your white and red points, together with your cute little pug, back in December. I hope that I will be as successful as all of you. Thanks also for the link.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Beetle, I forgot to mention your extraordinary poinsettia, with the ruffles. Ninecrow called it "carousel red" It is the most beautiful one that I have seen, ever. Thank you for sharing your pictures.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Thanks so much lizanne!! Unfortunately, that beauty [carousol red, kicked the bucket after it lost its leaves. I still don't understand why certain types make it, and others don't. My Marble Star, is holding all her bracts and leaves, so maybe there is hope!
Would love to see pics of your Ecke Burgandy, sounds Lovely
Happy growing, Fiona

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Beetle, I'm so sorry about Carousel. It created such a wonderful impression on me, that I promised myself, that if I could keep these going, just living and not even reflowering, I would get one. Of course, I will try to get them to bloom again, if I am lucky enough to make them live. With all the help on this forum, I should be able to make it. I did not see your Marble Star. It sounds exotic. I will go back and check. As far as posting pictures, I must muster up some courage, even though puglvr sent me a great link.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Hi lizanne, I didn't post a proper pic of MS, but if you scrool up on this page, the bracts are here.

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Thanks Beetle, I did see it. Although the picture is not large I could see the marbling. Nice plant. I finally got my pictures uploaded to Photobucket. I am having a problem attaching it to this message. I'll try again.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

I saved two poinsettas from church, and they are doing great. I am a poinsetta virgin, and I have a few questions. I have seed pods on both of them, what should I do with them? I am gifted with a rather green thumb, so growing is not a problem. How much do I prune back? When do I prune? They both are still very colourful. I live just outside of phoenix, az. (sorry I don't know what zone that is. Thank you for your help.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Isn't it getting to be poinsettia pruning time? It is nearly St. Patrick's Day. What are you doing nine and other point growers? Do you root prune too when you repot them?

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Yup, I pruned mine down by half last weekend.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Normaly I would have Cut back by now, but as I have seed Pods Growing.....

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

ok. so when do you guys repot and what size do you go to? Mine are both in 6 inch. (12 cm) pots right now, and look like they need more space.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

My points had the beginnings of a seed pod and green leaves too, but I decided I didn't want them to put energy to seed production when they could be storing up for next year's display.
I just finished pruning mine back quite hard (seed pods and all.) I have pruned one to eight inches (20 cm) before, but it was too tall. so I bravely and/or stupidly cut my two points down to five inches (12-13 cm) and the other just under four inches (10 cm.) Not that I can do anything about it now, but is this too drastic of a pruning? I know Nine has really whacked draven back before (pretty much as harshly has I have just done), but it was quite a bit later in the season too.

Tommyr- why do you cut yours by half? Do you do a follow up pruning and why? Is it too early to prune back fully?

Correction on the above post of mine-
I meant to say a 15 cm pot not a 12.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

It's just what I have always done to keep them more small and compact. You could do a second pruning in July as well but I usually just do a March cut back. Right now I only have one point., I have over 21 orchids, lots of carnivorous plants as well as other houseplants. I have way too many! Last count over 65 IN the house. Can't wait to move most of them out in May.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Our department received one from the Captain overseeing our department - and I've been taking care of her - I've been reading about poinsettia care and it looks like I should be trimming her back soon? I still have red leaves on top (though very sparse now) - should I actually cut the stems to cut it back to 8 inches? she tops out at 12 inches. I don't want to make any cuts if they aren't really needed.
She's still in the pot that she came in at Christmas time - I had also read that I shouldn't repot her until June - which is my plan. Any tips anyone can give me? I really want to try to bring this one back for the holidays. Everyone else in our building that received one has managed to let theirs die.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

I chopped my two back quite savagely a week ago. The tallest one after I cut it back was only 4 inches. Now, they are both starting to regrow. Prune them now, then water well and don't do it again until it is dry and starting to regrow. I was amazed at how fast mine is regrowing already. Just a few days ago in my posts I was wondering if it was too drastic-- it wasn't. They are hardy little plants.

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

I don't have a point but I find this thread fascinating . . . what do you do with the trimmings when you prune them back? Do you make new plants with them or just throw them out? As a member of euphorbs couldn't you start new plants?

RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Draven is growing New Shoots... ***WHOOHOOT***
Quite a Lot by the looks of it.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Supermom,
You CAN start new plants with the prunings. Take 3-4 inch cuttings and stick in moist potting MIX.

Easy peasy as they say!

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

My mother, of all people (the green thumb skipped a generation, and I'm only 22 and have finally realized this after many a Mother's Day and birthday gift gone brown), still has her poinsettia. But not only it is still doing fine, in the same pot it came with from my work, in the same foil wrapper (finally convinced her to at least take if off when she waters and drains it). To make matters odder, this poinsettia was one of the last ones we had at work on Christmas Eve, and they basically give one to every employee, and I took this one home for my mom because I didn't have the need for one at my house.

I smile inside when I see that thing still kicking. Even when there's a small pile of now empty pots on her porch that formerly held so nicely planted things.

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

After the harsh cutback a little over a month ago my points have revived and are growing well.

This is my new red point with a pink one newly acquired this last christmas.

Pink and red point 1st yr

Close up of the red one

Red point 2nd first year

close up of the pink

pink point 1st yr

This is my last and oldest point at the end of this last summer. He was too big to put a box over and got an early prune back. He is not doing as well as last year. This was him in his "glory days."

1st point at 1 yr.

How's everyone else doing with their points?

 o
RE: AnyBody Still Got Their Poinsettia 09

Thank you ninecrow.

This is year two for the big point christmas of '07. That was him at the end of this last august. He is a common red type. He was too big to do the blooming thing by the end of september. I had to cut him back early this year. I cut him to eight inches as per directions of many websites, but now he is bare underneath and not looking so good. Could I prune him again shorter? Too late? Too much stess on the plant if I did? What do you think?

Here he is as of today, a mere shadow of what he once was.

Looking GOOD Tommy...
Draven's Not looking as Good as Yours for Some Reason... Perhaps the Root Prune and Repot should of been done when he was 1st cut back... *Sigh*

Hmmm, one thing I am going to try soon is Seaweed extract. It's supposed to be awesome for plants. Lots of trace elements and root stimulation they say.
Check this out then Google it as well!

Hi Nine, Two of them are cortez burgandys, and the little third one is a real bright red [not sure of the name] I lost the gorgeous marble star this spring when it was pruned back :( Thats two kind of fancy ones![the ruffled didnt make it either. Think I'll stick to the tried and true reds lol!
don't worry, I'm sure your Draven will pick up growth soon :) then the darkening process begins yippee!
