Money Tree (Pachira) Pruning - please help!

Hi everyone,

I have the worst of black thumbs, but have somehow kept this money tree, which I received October of 2011 as a gift, alive. It's been living in the fluorescent lights at my desk at work, and has grown quite quickly since then. I water it every few days, but besides that, nothing. It gets about 12 hours of light from the fluorescent each day.

The height from my desk to the fluorescent lamp is about 24 inches, and the tree has grown so much it's hit the lamp and can't grow any more, so I would like to prune it to keep it small, so I can keep it on my desk. I've read other threads on how to prune, but I'm afraid of just chopping the whole plant off to foster new growth. How can I best achieve a shorter, more mushroom-shaped tree? Is there anything else I should be doing for it? Thank you!!
