Just curious...what types of plants do you grow as houseplants?

| see, this is helpful. You made me remember I have a D. marginata tricolor too! And a Madagascar Palm pachypodium! I had a parlor palm in th house but decided to plant it in my greenhouse as it is so voluminous. I want to get some more houseplants, and I am looking for ideas. I don't want ficus, or corn plants. Crotons, Ti leaves etc don't thrive indoors for me so I grow them elsewhere under protection. I had a huge MOnstera deliciosa in the house, and a very large Strelitzia (white bird of paradise) but they just took up too much space so they live on the porch now. |

| Hey, Bihai, do you have any of the cool new sans that have round stems and look like a minimalist sculpture? I saw several at a new plant display at a conference last week. Grower said they look really cool but have trouble with brown tips and scarring (not good for an interiorscaper with fussy clients). Forgive the mix of common and scientific names, I'm tired. At home, I have: Philodendron 'Brasil' Philodendron 'Moonlight' Rhapis excelsa (Lady Palm) - love this one! Variegated rubber tree (Ficus elastica) Sygonium 'Pink Splash' or 'Pink Flash' or something like that Sygonium 'Trileaf Wonder' - love this one too Anthurium, red Variegated ficus Spathiphyllum 'Domino' Chlorophyllum 'Fireflash' Clivia, orange 2 zz plants 2 Christmas cactus, salmon and red 1 hoya 1 ponytail palm 3 small cacti 2 amaryllis Dracaena reflexa Dracaena Janet Craig compacta 2 Chinese evergreens 2 snake plants 1 ratty 19 year old ficus tree that has one more summer to get its act together Overgrown ugly pothos on a pole that I'm giving away About 2 dozen assorted foliage cuttings rooting in water - homalomena, chinese evergreens, zz's, ming aralia, coleus, not sure what else is up there right now Orchids: About 12 phalaenopsis 3 Phaius 1 Phaiocalanthe 2 Spathoglottis About 6 assorted minicattleyas Lusidisia discolor Just overwintering indoors, not really houseplants: Citronella geranium Bougainvilla 'Raspberry Ice' Upright elephant ear (unlabeled variety) 4 tropical waterlilies 2 umbrella palms 1 papyrus 4 Algerian ivies Whew! |

How do the Spath. Domino and the Chloro. Fireflash do indoors? I have both those plants planted in the ground in my greenhouse. I got the Fireflash several years ago when it was a "new" plant on the market. I have always really liked it. And Domino is just a knockout. |
RE: Just curious...what types of plants do you grow as houseplant
| | |
| Domino does fabulously in the house - gotta LOVE that variegation, Fireflash is doing quite well, getting a few leaf spots, I'm either overwatering or it's getting mites, not sure yet. You'll notice probably half of my collection is either variegated or has some other sort of color bonus to the foliage. I'll be collecting orchids with variegated foliage next - I just discovered they exist! How about some of the aralias - ming, balfour, black, etc.? A bit challenging, but I'm sure you're up for it. Dracaena 'Lemon-Lime' is fun, great color to the leaf. And everyone should own a ZZ plant. Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' or 'Key Largo' or any of the ones with huge leaves. Schefflera 'Amate'? |
RE: Just curious...what types of plants do you grow as houseplant
| | |
I have them both and they do just fine indoors. Maybe a little more time adjusting with the fireflash. The Domino sure likes it's water! More so than the all green. The Domino can REALLY wilt when getting thirsty, so I try and watch it little more closely during the week, especially during winter. Billy Rae |

Watergal, I have some variegated orchids. I have 2 variegated phals, a variegated Arachnis "Maggie Oe", and a variegated Epidendrum cross, variegated Vanilla, and variegated Neofinitis falcata. I used to have a variegated Dendrobium but it croaked. I may just go get another Domino from Lowes or HD today for the house. I have 2 big Obake-type Anthuriums I want to relocate to my greenhouse and need something to fill their spots. |

| I try to have at least one plant in every room to clean the air, provide oxygen and brighten the place up! Except for orchids, I'm not too big on flowering plants and tend to stick mostly to foliage plants. No one cares if I use mostly common names, right? Living room: Pothos Pothos cutting (...from the above plant. I don't mind it getting leggy, but it was starting to loose alot of leaves) Kitchen/nook: Dracaena Marginata Dracaena Marginata Tricolour 2 Dracaena Lemon Lime (one of them didn't have much variegation when I bought it so I thought it was a different cultivar until it started to look like the other!) Anthurium (growing on a chunk of lava rock. Nifty idea since it is it's natural habitat but mold is becoming a constant problem) Christmas cactus Dumb cane Coffee plant Ficus Weeping fig (variegated, not quite as fussy as you'd expect) Calthea Peperomia Neanthebella (Parlour) palm Fluorescent light garden (not sure if this counts as "indoors." Conditions are more like a greenhouse): 3 Phalaenopsis 3 Paphiopedilum 2 Oncidium 2 jewel orchids 1 Masdevallia 1 Cattleya 1 Dendrobium 1 Maidenhair fern 2 Tillandsia 2 Lucky bamboo (water) 1 pineapple top (rooting) several christmas cactus cuttings Bedroom: Aspidistra Snake plant Coleus Lucky bamboo (dirt) Amaryllis 2 Jade plants (emergency mid-winter rooting job) Some other type of crassula (emergency repotting) Several "minature" succulents (not sure if they're true minatures or bonsaied or seedlings or what. Got them from a guy at the flea market and I haven't seen him since) Bathroom: Asparagus fern (going out on the balcony and into a hanging basket come spring. I've also tried actual ferns in here and they just don't do well) |

| Have been growing houseplants since the 60's (that's 1960's...LOL) so not too many of those listed have escaped at least a trial, but favorites I don't see mentioned are: Cycads (several), Ctenanthe oppenheimiana, Stromanthe sanguinea, and Curculigo capitulatus. I also really enjoy the Polyscias (Aralias) as someone mentioned, several Cyperus, Alocasia Frydek. No flowering plants but I too enjoy the Croton or Redleaved Cordyline, plus variegated Pleomele and Dracaena marginata for contrast with the greens. Almost forgot a dwarf Bamboo and I've grown the Blackstemmed Phylostachus nigra inside as well, although it's hardy here. Bahia, it's not fair that you can grow so much outside in zone 9 and have a greenhouse, too...LOL Palms soon outgrow my space so now I stick with Cycads which remind me of Palms, except for Chamaedora elegans which doesn't look palmlike at all...LOL josh. |

RE: Just curious...what types of plants do you grow as houseplant

| I'm not Bahia, Josh. Bahia lives in CA and is a man. I am Bihai, I live in FL and am a woman. I am surprised to hear that cycads can be used as houseplants! I would think that a lot would get way too big and unweildy. I have never had any luck trying to keep crotons or cordylines in the house. They whine and moan and drop leaves til I move them outside. Its too dry here in my house. Yes, I live in zone 9, but its 9A, not 9B. We get 2-3 frosts and at least 1 hard freeze here every winter. So to grow the tropical and ultratropical plants in my collection, a greenhouse that can be kept 50F or above is an absolute necessity. If I could keep all my stuff in the house, I would, in a second! But its hard to use the water hose in the house, LOL. You guys are definitely a bad influence, I bought an aralia yesterday. I have no idea which one though. I'll have to take a photo and let you guys ID it for me. I have some Chamie metallica in the greenhouse. Beautiful little dwarf palms. They would make good houseplants. The palms that probably make the BEST houseplants are Calyptrocalyx palms. They are not everyday run of the mill (that is, you can't pick them up at box stores generally) but they are worth growing from seed or special ordering from somewhere like Hawaii. They are rainforest understory palms, most are small in stature and they tolerate low light very well. |

| Bihai, sorry for the mixup re names...and thanks for the info re Calyptrocalyx Palms. I found a great article detailing the background of one in particular which is beautiful with red new growth. Mostly I enjoyed the tale of its being found and brought into cultivation...the history is as interesting to me as growing plants. My Cycads are grown as psuedo-bonsai I suppose you'd say, in that almost all older leaves are removed when the new upright flush appears...keeps them manageable in 10" pots. Since my other main mania is books, Cycads can sit on bookshelves under windows, or atop taller ones. No hose but I find a handful or two of icecubes is easy and doesn't hurt the plants. I'll admit though it gets a little jungly around here in the winter...LOL Interesting thread...fun to see what everyone grows. josh |

| Toni, my, what an assortment. You evidently have the magic touch with all types of plants requiring various levels and methods of care. Bihai, I'll try for Cycad photos but will need help from my son uploading. I use webtv rather than a computer and while I've attempted photos once or twice it really seemed like a whole lot of grief for my poor photo skills. LOL Really, though, the key is just growing in tight quarters (small pot), and letting them rest during winter...only enough water to survive. Outside in summer where they get watered daily. No fertilizer ever. I like the big corm (?) as much as the fronds so I let that stick up above pot level...and if they have "pups" so much the better, like my Sago (about 14" tall). One reason I remove the older fronds in fall is space but the main reason is to see where those fronds originate. My Cardboard Cycad (about 10" tall) has sadly defoliated (must have missed it once too often with my icecube rounds) but will flush new leaves this summer. C. circinnalis is looking great as are the other 2 whose names I'll have to find. I noticed Toni listed Cycads too...they really are easy and don't require lots of sun in winter if they get outside in summer. Isn't that your experience, Toni? They just put out one flush of leaves yearly over a period of a week or two...that's it for the year...LOL josh |

| Okay, well, last time somebody asked this, it took me like 45 minutes to type out the whole list, so I'm just going to list the family and genus, and not try to break it down much beyond that: 79 Araceae (Anthurium, Dieffenbachia, Aglaonema, Philodendron, Epipremnum, Homalomena, Monstera, Spathiphyllum, Syngonium, Zamioculcas) 35 Asphodelaceae (Haworthia, Gasteria) 26 Ruscaceae (Dracaena, Ophiopogon, Aspidistra, Beaucarnea, Sansevieria) 21 Cactaceae (Cereus, Echinocactus, Astrophytum, Hatiora, Hylocereus, Schlumbergera) 17 Aloaceae (Aloe) 17 Crassulaceae (Crassula, Kalanchoe, Echeveria, Sedum) 13 Bromeliaceae (Ananas, Aechmea, Guzmania, Vriesea, Tillandsia, Cryptanthus) 12 Agavaceae (Agave, Yucca) 11 Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbia, Synadenium, Pedilanthus) 11 Liliaceae (Chlorophytum, Asparagus) 7 Apocynaceae (Hoya, Pachypodium) 6 Asparagaceae (Cordyline) 6 Moraceae (Ficus) 5 Begoniaceae (Begonia) 5 Lamiaceae (Plectranthus) 5 Saxifragaceae (Saxifraga) 5 Urticaceae (Pilea) 4 Commelinaceae (Tradescantia, Zebrina) 3 Araliaceae (Schefflera, Dizygotheca -- which is also Schefflera) 3 Araucariaceae (Araucaria) 3 Hyacinthaceae (Ledebouria) 3 Pandanaceae (Pandanus) 3 Piperaceae (Peperomia) 2 Arecaceae (Rhapis, Chamaedorea) 2 Asteraceae (Gynura, Senecio) 2 Davalliaceae (Davallia) 2 Gesneriaceae (Saintpaulia, Nematanthus) 2 Marantaceae (Maranta) 2 Myrsinaceae (Ardisia) 2 Polypodiaceae (Asplenium, Cyrtomium) 2 Strelitziaceae (Strelitzia) 1 Amarathaceae (Alternanthera) 1 Amaryllidaceae (Clivia) 1 Cyclanthaceae (Carludovica) 1 Orchidaceae (Ludisia) 1 Portulacaceae (Portulacaria) 1 Rubiaceae (Coffea) 1 Rutaceae (Murraya) 1 Vitaceae (Cissus) I seem to actually be collecting (somewhat against my better judgment): cultivars of Ficus benjamina, Dracaena deremensis, Anthurium andreanum, and Sansevieria trifasciata, plus hybrids of Aglaonema and Aloe. |

RE: Just curious...what types of plants do you grow as houseplant

| hopefulauthor: My list is going to be getting shorter soonish; I just need to have a day off work and a day with nice weather happen at the same time, and then some of them will be moving elsewhere. But god only knows when that will be. bihai: It's both better and worse than it looks. It's not a house, it's a 2-bdr. apartment, which is worse. But, an awful lot of those are still fairly small plants that don't take up a huge amount of room, which is better. On the third hand, they all keep getting bigger, and outgrowing the space they're in, which leads to rearranging of everything, and sooner or later a few of them may outgrow the apartment entirely: I bought a cute little Ardisia elliptica in July, maybe 7 or 8 inches tall in a 3-inch pot, and it's now been moved up twice (to a 4-inch pot and then a 6-inch pot) and is 19 inches tall. At this rate, it'll be brushing the ceiling by Labor Day. I'm not sure what will happen when we reach that point. On the fourth hand, there are lots of shelves and shop lights set up for the plants, which keep them more stacked on top of each other and less covering the whole floor (though they've been encroaching on the floor a little bit too). |
RE: Just curious...what types of plants do you grow as houseplant
| | |
| mr s, Where are they all going on that elusive warm day off of work? To the consignment store? You do have one mightily impressive list! Add three more phalaenopsis orchids and a streptocarpus to my list - post-Valentine's day treats to myself, also consolation prizes for not landing a really big prospect for my business. Apparently I value my plant expertise a lot more than they do. :( |
RE: Just curious...what types of plants do you grow as houseplant
| | |
| Well, a few of them are going to work with me, to be donated to the store and sold, and Wonderful Co-Worker has expressed interest in some Begonias I've propagated at home from a leaf (post), but most of them are probably going to the consignment store, either because there are already tons of them at work, or because they wouldn't sell at work, or whatever. I'm hoping to get a lot of my duplicates cleared away, one way or another, and make some room for stuff I haven't been able to place anywhere yet. I haven't actually sat down and tried to figure up how many are going where, but I'm thinking one way or another I should be able to get back down to about 250-275 plants, which would make me happy. |

I love to try anything just to see it grow and if I can get it to grow...I posted pics in the thread about 'its winter friends lets see your plants' something like that...linda |

| I've only been working on my current collection for 2 years now 'cause I keep having to leave behind my collections 'cause I used to move alot, but this is what I've got so far. x2 Sansevieria trifasciata (one regular, one laurentii) Spathiphyllum wallisii Chlorophytum comosum variegatum Cereus peruvianus Hoya carnosa Podocarpus macrophyllus Dracaena marginata x2 Codiaeum variegatum pictum (one regular, one Golden Star) Ficus diversifolia x2 Howiea (some say Howea) belmoreana Hypoestes sanguinolenta (had 3 colors, red, white and pink but for some reason the red didn't make it) Dieffenbachia picta Exotica x2 Zygocactus truncatus (one with white flowers, the other with salmon) African violet (grew from a cutting) Schefflera actinophylla Citrus paradisi (grapfruit tree from seed ^_^) Echinocereus pectinatus Lobivia famatimensis Lemaireocereus marginatus An uknown cactus that looks kind of like a Lobivia but yet not...but I call it my snowman cactus 'cause they way it's shaped it looks like a snowman without a head. Philodendron scandens Sedum morganianum Saxifraga sarmentosa Beaucarnea recurvata Aglaonema Silver Queen Tillandsia cyanea Kalanchoe tomentosa A succulent whose leaves are bluish green and fuzzy and slightly pointed at the ends. Thought it may have been an Echeveria setosa...but those leaves are waxy...not fuzzy. Sedum pachyphyllum Aphelandra squarrosa louisae Sempervivum arachnoideum Coleus (just a little seedling) Araucaria heterophylla x2 Hedera helix (one Glacier, one sagittaefolia) Coffea arabica Gasteria liliputana (one of my personal favs) Lavandula heterophylla Radermachera sinica Dracaena deremensis x2 Pteris (one ensiformis victoriae, one cretica albolineata) Zamioculcus zamiifolia (the infamous ZZ plant, another one of my favs) Crassula perforata (probably not a good reason to buy a plant but I bought it merely for it's common name...string of buttons!) That's it, that's all. 14 of the plants on that list were added just this month! >_< I went a little nuts, but I couldn't help myself. I have a few seeds I'm waiting on too though. Fuschia, Cactus, Salpiglossis, Strelitzia, Passiflora, Musa, Dracaena (forget exactly what it is), Lithops and a Succulent. |

Hi! I don't have too many right now, because they all have to crowd around my little dorm window I have: -A Peperomia of some unknown sort. I started it about four years ago from a cutting from the big plant my grandma had. -A little ivy that was given to me as a cutting about 5 months ago -A little Crassula ovata I bought myself because it's adorable -A christmas cactus i just got for christmas -A Schefflera arboricola, which is my newest addition - At home I have an ancient Aspidistra, which is probably about 100 years old (and which I'm perpetually terrified i'll kill) |
