I posted to the aroid forum too. I recently purchased a small P. giganteum variegated......neat looking plant with great variegation. Does anyone else here grow this (or event the regular green variant)? Any photos or information or advice is appreciated. -Chris

Woodnative, I don't have P. giganteum, (I wish, lol) so I did a search for you.
The addy is:

http://www.exoticrainforest.com/Philodendron%20giganteum%20%20pc.html

Please, read the article..it's really informative and interesting. There's also a nursery (great plants) on page one. lol. Toni

PS..Do you have a pic?

hopefulauthor-
I have seen that site before.......he has an AWESOME set up. I have seen a couple net pics of P. giganteum....but nothing on this variegated form (I think I found one pic of someone who had a splashed variegated form). My plant is very small (4" pot), and really looks like any Philo at this point, but wiht a nice white margin. The leaf centeres are a creamy bluish grayish green. I am curious if the identity is correct, and where it is ocming from. I am sure it will start showing up other places.

Wood, if you Google, Philodendron pictures or Philodendron photos, several pages of Philo pics pop up.
They are sooo very beautiful!

Your Philo sounds gorgeous..too bad you don't have a pic to share.
Gotta love variegated plants! :)

Do you know Randy and Sherm? They specialize in variegated plants..Father and son..They're not sellers/businessmen, collecting, hunting variegated specimens are their hobby.
They even found variegated 'weeds' and 'Petunias.' lol. Think I have their site addy on Favorites, I'll check. He had a good selection of variegated Philos...
Last I heard, Randy lost interest, or something happened, so he gave or possibly sold his plants. But his site is still avialable. Ill check and get back to you.

I assume Philos need the same care. Perhaps, yours needs more light to keep colors pronounced.?.?
Bright light, and definately humidity...they love humidity.
My Philos do well in obstructed south windows, year round. Windows don't get much direct sun, mostly bright light. I keep a humidifer in the room, and spray daily. Smaller pots sit on pebbles with water, and a weekly hose in the kitchen sink.
I had a huge Philo collection, but gave most to a friend..When older they need a LOT of room, something I'm running out. lol..
My Pink Princess, (green/red/pink) are in a cool room, a few feet from west and north windows. An indoor fountain runs 24/7, so it/they're (have two) get humidity and a fair amount of light..One PP is a little over 4 yrs..Although it's kept its colors, leaves aren't as large as they should be..So, IMO, variegated plants needs quite a bit more light than non-variegated..

Try Googling, and see if you come up with a match. I'll look for Randy and Sherms site addy..Toni

I can appreciate the lack of room!!!! Trying to grow way too much in a small house on a small property!! Yes, I tried googling and can't find this particular plant. Glasshouse Works has a variegated P. giganteum but not this one. I know Randy and Sherm, I have even traded some things with them in the past. Great guys...but they are pursuing other interests now. Unfortunate (for the rest of us). I have got 'Pink Princess' too, neat plant. Also variegated Montera is awesome and a must have!

RE: Philodendron giganteum variegated

You're right, there is very little info out there..
I found a few pics on Dave's Garden. And GHW's..Glasshouse's isn't the same as yours? Oh Boy! lol
Another common name for your Philo is Giant Philo.
I wonder if Google's search engine differs from Yahoo.?

Pink Princess is gorgeous. I like it so much, while at a local gh a couple wks back, they had a larger PP for 15.00, so it followed me home..lol. I also find Pink Lady interesting. Before giving away Philos, I took a clipping of Pink Lady..

A friend of Randy's, his name is Steve, had a site w/all types of variegated aroids. His addy might have been raretropicalplants.com. I wonder if he's still around.

Are you familiar with P. Imbe variegata? If so, is your philo similar in looks? Toni

Hi!!

Woodnative and Toni!

I love Philodendrons. They are easy to care for, you can put them anywhere there is light, they never have bugs, and I mean I have never seen a mite on mines, for me that is, and you can almost neglect them!
Very low maintenance!!
Why, if I can kill one of these, then I might as well throw in the towel..lol
Where can I get some of the nice ones you are all talking about? I would love to trade you for something for some cuttings, or even acquire a couple if any of you are willing to share.:-)
In fact, I love them! The only ones I have is the average green and white, the almost florescent yellow green;and this one is so pretty, and a regular green one.
None of them take up space. I have them hanging from ceilings..lol

I really like this thread. Thanks for sharing everyone.

I will try to post a pic. Of course this is a VERY young plant (4" pot)

RE: Philodendron giganteum variegated

Woodnative, I can't open your pic. Seems like something is missing in the address...could that be?

Mike, I didn't know you grew philos, too..lol..Do you know which types? Hanging or uprights? or both? lol.
There's are a couple thousand varieties, I think? Some with tiny leaves, others several feet long.

Mike, too bad you didn't tell me you wanted cuttings last summer. I gave away the majority of my collection, some quite old.
Do you have pics of your Philos? I'm curious which yellow you have? And the green and white, too.
I have an Un-ID'd philo that's been living in water 3+ yrs..Leaves are green, shiny, and small 2-3" with pointed tips. Except for Pink Princess, the remainders are cuttings from the philo's I gave away. If you want to wait, perhaps sideshoots will form by summer.
Natural Selections sells beautiful philos..prices are steep, but plants are good-sized, and types you probably wouldnt find in your local nursery..Toni

RE: Philodendron giganteum variegated

Woodnative, your philo? is the prettiest, most interesting I'd ever seen. Where did you find this rarity? Online or a local nursery?
I gave away 'most' of my Philos, but would love finding one like yours...It's beautiful!
It's growing similar to 'August,' at least as it's young age, but that could/will probably change when mature.
Do you have any info at all? Can you notify the grower or nursery where it was purchased?

It's young, but once it starts growing, lookout! You're going to have a monster on your hands..it will definately need space, especially if it's a true gigantum. What a specimen your Philo will make.

But honestly, Woodnative, if you hadn't said it was a Philo I'd have never known its ID.. Look at the stems..They're shaped like Philo, Anthurium or even some Aglaonemea. Stems look short. Are they? Size from base to bottom of leaf, where they connect.

You'll know for certain in due time. Have you repotted yet? or are you waiting to acclimate?
Do me a favor, Wood, please keep posting pics as your plant grows...Please..And thanks for posting a picture.

In the meantime, give it the same care as you would any other Philo..Bright light, humidity, etc..Do you have other Philos? Toni

PS, where are you located? If you don't mind me asking.

RE: Philodendron giganteum variegated

Toni-
I am in NJ. Yes, I have Pink Princess, P. glaucophyllum (not valid name, but awesome "blue" Philo), P. domesticum, a couple green NOIDs. I am babying this....not repotted yet. It was a chance fine at a family owned nursery in PA. New to them too and they didn't know much about it. Labeled Philodendron giganteum variegated. The plants look like they came out of tissue culture. I will keep you updated.

RE: Philodendron giganteum variegated
