Repotting Boston Fern Questions

Posted by CozyFarmhouse 5 (My Page) on

Hello, I'm a houseplant novice.

I bought this Boston Fern at Lowe's last July. It has more then doubled in size and seems to be very happy on my dining room table.

Last week I noticed it's roots starting to poke through the bottom of the pot and I'm wondering if it might be time to repot? I don't really want it to get much bigger and I've read that bigger pot = bigger fern.

So, will putting it back in the same size pot with fresh soil be enough to keep it healthy? And can I get away with not dividing it? I'm afraid I'll mess it up...

Wow! Sorry, I can't help ya, as I've never had luck with ferns. But yours is lovely and makes me want to try one again . . .

Cozy, the smartest thing for you to do with your beautiful fern is to cut it cleanly in half....slice a couple of inches off the bottom, too. Repot one half with new potting medium and it will fill out in no time.

Pot up the other half in a different container for yourself or to share.

Thanks, Ozarkia!

I fully expected this one to die. So far it has been very easy to maintain- just water once a week.

Ok, rhizo_1. that sounds kind of scary, but I will give it a try.

Just an update:

I followed rhizo_1's advice to a T on March 31st and both halves are doing well.

Lots of new growth on both and filling in nicely!
(They are not as pale/yellow as they look, it's the early morning sunlight washing out the photos)

CozyFarmhouse,
You almost can't tell that you divided them, they both look great!

Ferns love to be divided and root pruned. It should be an annual event.

(I just love it when people follow my advice 'to a T '.) ;-)
