Help with plant

stolives

I need some help. My sister in law gave me 2 of her plants to babysit for a few months and I think I'm systematically killing them. The first, I'm sure is a case of overwatering. I think it is an algaonema (she's had it for 20 years). Some of the leaves (about 5) had turned yellow before I realized my mistake. At that point, about 2 weeks ago, I took it out of its container and sat it in a shallow cardboard box lined with newspaper for 2 days in hopes of wicking some of the moisture from the soil. That seemed to work well enough. I repotted the plant and have left it alone since. Some of the leaves are still turning a mottled yellow and some look like they're translucent in places. Anyhow, any advise, wisdom, common knowledge you can impart would be greatly appreciated! I'll write about the other plant in a separate post...
