Avocado Tree Advice

Hello everyone!

A while back I decided to experiment with a couple of seeds. I now have an Avocado tree that is about 1.5 feet high with long narrow leaves - all of which are a full bright green. What I have noticed, however, is that all the leaves seem to be attached to the main stem. That is, there are no branches! I did some research and came to the conclusion that the tree should have been pruned a lot earlier. My question is... is there anything I can do at this point to encourage branch development? Is it possible to cut the main "trunk" down to about 3-4 inches from the soil with the hope that branches will stem from that point on? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Samuel
