Yes, that is exactly right - you chop the trunk down to the height where you want the first branching to occur. Don't do it now, though....wait until Summer when the tree is growing well and is acclimated to the outdoors. That will encourage the fastest recovery and the most compact new growth.

I'm holding in my left hand the top of the Avocado that I removed.

omg..... wasn't that hard to do? I know that I should do
this...all of the Avo I grow are way too weak and floppy.
can you then root what you have cut off?

I've chopped my Avocado so many times that I don't even think about now ;-)

I'm sure you could root the cuttings, but it's not worth it to me. They grow so quickly from seed.

Pot it with the roots pointing down and about a quarter of the seed exposed above the potting mix.
