Hm, I think the general mix I see for Boston ferns includes sand, soil, and moss...and other variations similar of course.

Boston ferns like a good bit of humidity and moisture in the soil but I think soggy is a bad thing. When I water mine the water drains and keeps the soil moist, but not soggy.

I think if its not sitting in water, as long as it drains, you shouldn't have to worry about root rot. Did you perhaps put too much water? That's the only thing that I could think of making the soil soggy unless I was wrong about the soil mix.

There is a direct relationship between the size of the particles a soil is made of and the amount of water it retains. Some water retention is necessary, but the more water the soil retains within particles and the less between particles, generally speaking, the better the opportunity the soil offers for plants to realize their genetic potential and the easier/ more foolproof it is to grow in. Poor soils magnify small errors and excellent soils forgive what would normally be serious sins in more water retentive media.

Your plant would really appreciate a mix with lots of chunky pine bark and a little peat and perlite, or a mix with some large gritty particles and some pine or fir bark. Something that looks like one of these:

Come to think of it, that's exactly what I did.. I overwatered haha. I think I had the idea that you can't overwater a plant if there are drainage holes.. But that proved to be wrong. I'll have to wait a bit for the soil to dry out now, and not make the same mistake. Hopefully plants will be ok. Thanks for the help!
