Ponytail palm branching.

I read somewhere that a ponytail palm can be encouraged to branch at a younger age by wounding the trunk/base flare. Does anyone know anything about this, if it works, if it's fairly safe to do, and if so, how to do it?

I wouldn't think that wounding the base would encourage branching, but I do know that when the top of my ponytail palm rotted out, multiple branches formed. I think that cutting the center where the leaves emerge will encourage branching.
