sticky sap from Cylceman

Friend has a cycleman houseplant that has sap all over the pot, drips all over, says it even seems like it 'spits' as it is not just where the pot is. Wondering why? I haven't seen it to see if there are 'scales' on the plant, it is still flowering and looks good except for this icky sap. Anything that can be done with it? Thanks.
