Very nice, I believe it's a tropical, in the family of Stromanthe, Cetanthe, Marantha. So yes, that would make it likely to enjoy the current hot, muggy summer.

I agree with pirate_girl, it looks like it belongs to Maranta, perhaps Maranta leuconeura. It's also known as "Prayer Plant."

Unless the name has changed, it's a Maranta leuconeura erythroneuro, Red Veined Maranta. Whew. How would you like to have to sign that name a few times a day?

Can we assume that the pretty container you have it in has drainage holes?

Commercially it's called Maranta Tricolour (sp?).

Great little plant, prone to mealy bug and gets tipped leaves in hot dry locations. Looks good in a mixed arrangement with other purply things.

One of my holy grail plants is Maranta Massangeana: looks like a black & white picture of the OP's one. I've only ever seen one and there's about one pic on the entire internet. So it's safe to say I won't be seeing them commercially any time soon!
