Removing old mother plant?

Hi, firstly I have no idea what this is, so any help there would be appreciated.

I was given this a couple of months ago, seemingly dead and in a pot of bone dry soil. It had been chopped down to about 8 inches, no signs of life and leaves dry and brown all up their edges. I gave it a feed and a good drink after upsizing its pot, just putting new compost in to fill the gap. I kept it watered and checked regularly but nothing was happening.

Last week I decided to dump it as I'm running out of space for my growing collection. As I pulled it from its pot I noticed 3 small green shoots coming from the base. I then decided to split the old plant in half and put into 2 pots. It seemed to come part in the middle quite easily.

These shoots now seem to be doing rather well. So, how and when (if at all) can I tidy things up a little and get rid of the original growth?
