September flowers? Put 'em here.

Well I was surprised, in a way, that the August flower thread had such a dearth of responses. Try, try again I suppose.

Many if not all of the following plants were in bloom in August but are still in bloom now. So here's some of them:

{{gwi:102944}}

{{gwi:102945}}

{{gwi:100736}}

New record here -- again with Alocasia Poly. Had two flower scapes emerge at the same time from the same plant. However, one then stopped growing until the other had bloomed and declined. Then it started growing again. Don't know how common that is for Alocasia, but I can see where it would help prevent self pollination.

    I don't have anything so exotic, but my flowers please me. I haven't had this one very long, and forgot that they bloomed.

    And one of my angel wings. Does anyone have something they want to trade for an angel wing start? :)

    One more! I just rescued this bedraggled double impatiens from the clearance rack at the grocery store. It's supposed to be an indoor, shade-loving type of impatiens...we'll see! I need to baby it for a while and see how it fares.

    For a second i thought it was a rose! I didn't know impatiens can look so full. Used to just seeing capensis and pallida.

    I've downsized this summer, so not a lot of flower action going on. Not-so-great photo of mammillaria mystax blooming. Might take another shot, and my orchid and serissa should flower this month.

    Auron22, when I first saw it, I thought it was a mini rose! That's what drew me over to the clearance rack, because I've been toying with the idea of trying a mini rose. Then it turned out to be a double impatiens. The tag even says "roselike flowers" haha. I got it anyway, since it is so cute.

    Nice bloom on your cactus!

    Yes, he's a husky/australian shepherd mix.

    Wow! I was actually correct! When I first looked at him, I thought "Australian Shepherd" but then saw the tail and figured I was wrong and went with my secondary impression ... a husky.

    Here's a pretty interesting "bloom" that sprung up in one of my larger pots. I'm not sure what type of mushroom it is, but I thought it looked pretty cool.

    I bought this Begonia rex this past spring for its stunning/unique foliage. Its leaves are what looks to me like an iridescent black with a metallic red (though the summer heat caused the red in the newer leaves to be faded). Of course, this Exotic Angel was mislabeled as a Begonia rex "Strawberry" and I don't know what the true name is either. But this is still one of my favorites.

    The flowers seemed to be a bit finicky. The first buds would fall off before they could open. Then finally, I had these blooms hang in there and open up for me. The flowers turned out to be quite cute and interesting as well.

    Brugmansia - battered after strong wind, but still many fragrant blooms

    Parrot's beak

    Shrimp plant

    Sweet potato vine 'Nero' - very compact, trumpet-like blooms.

    Getting colder here, supposed to go down to below 50 next few nights - too early this year. Time to start moving them indoors.

    Rina

    Passion flower - blooming non-stop.

    I've waited over two years for these blooms. With growing plants, patience can be a virtue...

    I bought (or tried to buy) a division of a Brassavola nodosa off of eBay. The seller refunded the $$, but shipped the division to me anyways. I asked them why and they felt like it wasn't worth charging for. So I basically got it for free. When I got it, it was only a section with two leaves and barely any roots. I left it unpotted that Winter, thinking it probably wouldn't even make it. Plus, one of the leaves had fallen off. However, the other one didn't. So whenever I'd water my other plants, I'd toss it into the water and let it soak. Then Spring came around and I potted it up, using a small stake and orchid clip to hold it in place. It grew two tiny leaves and some roots. Now that it could take up water more efficiently, the original leaf plumped back up to its normal size.

    Last winter, I kept it under a grow light, where another slightly bigger leaf grew out. Then this Spring, I placed it outside and it finally grew a full sized leaf, along with many more roots. Then summer came and I noticed the flower spike growing. Which surprised me because the whole plant itself is still family small. I couldn't wait for the buds to open up, because I've heard about their strong nighttime fragrance. I was outside watering my plants one evening, and that's when I first noticed their fragrance. I could smell these two blooms from the other end of my yard. To me, they smell almost exactly like Oriental hybrid lilies.

    Needless to say that I have been going outside every night over and over again, just to smell their lovely fragrance. The blooms have just recently withered away, but one of them now has a seed pod growing from it. So apparently, something (a moth?) came along at night and pollinated it. Too bad I didn't get to witness that happening. It would've been pretty awesome. :)

    @Rina:
    Nice Parrot Beak! Always love seeing those but have yet to score a cutting of one to give a try.
    I've heard Passion Flowers can have a rather unpleasant scent ... how's yours?

    @Tommy:
    Ah yes, the "Queen of the Night" ... have heard from many about the very pleasing fragrance they have. Have never tried that one though. Most get too large for my space -- though I understand there is a dwarf cultivar -- and the flowers have never really caught my heart.

    I tend to forget about this one though it blooms off and on all year for me ...

    Ledebouria socialis, a tropical bulb plant. The bloom goes with the dark, spotted leaves. The colorful one against it is Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi. Above is a wax Begonia with Portulaca amilis. Bottom left corner, Kalanchoe tomentosa 'Chocolate Soldier.'

    Callisia cordifolia is starting to bloom. This plant usually goes straight down, but when blooming, the tips turn up. When I can catch a better pic of the actual flowers open, I'll add it. Look near the bottom right corner for 2 tiny white string things, those are 2 individual stamens. They're one of the smallest blooms out there.

    This pot was struggling, so recently repotted it. The Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' felt like making a little bloom.

    Also a wax Begonia, but with double flowers. This is a piece I snapped off of another plant and stuck in this pot about a month ago. I don't think it noticed, blooming then, still blooming now.

    I'm of the impression that Tiffany could make a plastic plant bloom. Flowers just wanna be near her for some reason!

    September's thread looks to have netted a fair number of pics,and everything's really way too pretty so I'd better post a pic with a nasty smudge on the glass to balance things out a bit. ;)

    Poor plant is kinda crammed in a tank so my lizards have leaves to hide in and lo and behold it throws up an equallly cramped bloom. I may have to replace some of those divisions with something else...they're just getting too big to be in there anymore.

    What kind of lizards and what size tank?

  • asleep_in_the_garden
    9 years ago

    Hiya Paul !

    The set-up consists of two 20gal "long" tanks,one inverted and placed on top(yes it's a pita having to lift the whole top tank off when I need in there,but I make due),..and the lizards are anoles.

    I'm a sucker for anolis carolinensis!

  • asleep_in_the_garden
    9 years ago

    Here's a shot of the tanks with a piggybacked set of ten gallon tanks next to it. Those two house another male who doesn't get along with the first one I got as company for my female. First one escaped and had been missing for near two weeks and after I bought a replacement for him,he showed back up in better health than I expected(heck,I thought he'd be a crispy critter!)...so yeah...they can't be housed together. I do switch out the males from time to time now so she has two boyfriends now...even if it was because I screwed up. lol

    Meanwhile note how in this shot you can see how the peace lily's flower is bent off the top and tilting back up again(poor thing!).

    The leaves crowd the top as you can see,and the anoles run around up there mostly.

    Hello friends, I hardly own any plants anymore. Have had a buisy summer and for now abandoned gardening, except for my very few houseplants. I'm currently studying to become a Fide Master in chess and starting 11 grade on the 8th. Nice to see you all

    This pot has 3 plants blooming, Chrysothemis pulchella (the orange flowers @ the top, a bulb plant,) Plectranthus verticillatus (Swedish ivy/creeping Charlie,) to the right, and the Begonia 'Sinbad' is kind of a cheat, a cutting added there a week ago.

    A closer pic of the Plectranthus blooms on another individual.

    Ledebouria socialis is putting up another flower stalk.

    Tradescantia sillamontana.

    Was going to suggest we start a thread for Sept. 2015, but as several folks have already posted here, and that Sept is almost gone, may as well finish 2015 here. Perhaps for Nov. 2015 we could start a new thread?

    I like being able to see stuff that's bloomed in a particular month, the year seems kind of irrelevant. But if you feel like starting a new discussion, I would participate. The URLs to the existing discussions are in my profile, did that because it's easy to paste when people say "I want a house plant that blooms." OK, "What month?" LOL! Questions like that often peter-out w/o many responses, but looking back at the pics, there's a surprising variety of blooms that can happen in the captivity of a pot.

    The Lycoris bulb is doing its' thing.

    The Swedish ivy (Plectranthus verticillatus) coming out of the top of this pot has been there for a while. The cuttings on the side were added in the past couple weeks, but still blooming. Tradescantia sillamontana and Begonia 'Sinbad.'

    Until moving them to AL with me, these elephant ears (Colocasia esculenta,taro,) were a potted house plant, stored in basement for winter. 2 Summers ago, I had one that bloomed, but this year, several of the offspring of the original bulb are finally big enough to do it too. They're not much to look at, a yellow thing sticking up in the middle of the leaves, but just the idea that they're there is really cool to me, after having these bulbs for so many years.

    The red thing is Lycoris radiata (red spider lily/naked lady/hurricane lily.)

    Looks like there were a bunch of them! I don't see these daily, they're @ my Mom's house. Apparently I hadn't taken a good look at "my" plants over there for a few weeks.
