Without correcting the problem, I don't think your plant will improve. Repotting might be a better solution. Remove any mushy roots at this time, and use a soil that dries quickly. When I've tried to grow plants from roots that I trimmed off of other plants, it doesn't work. Your plan sounds too similar to that for me to have much confidence in it.

I think my problem was that it was sitting in a saucer with some water in the bottom. I had it in a huge saucer with 3 other plants. It was in a hard place to reach. I have removed the saucer and have it where I can drain the saucer after I water it. Upon closer inspection, it has alot of new growth that doesn't have brown tips. I will just cut off the bad leaves and let the new grow out.
