Caring for Mosses, Selaginellas, etc

Hello!

I have recently gotten many moss-like cuties like selaginella aurea, baby's tears, "mood moss," "spike moss," etc. They're all doing well so far, but I'm concerned that I may not be watering them properly, because it's so hard to get your finger underneath their dense foliage to check out the soil moisture. Do you guys have any tips on how to keep them doing well? Do you water from below, or just wing it based on foliage appearance?
