| I have this Phalaenopsis that was given to me as a pup years ago, its flowered most years but like all my plants I neglected it....
So I decided to repot. I had to cut it out of the pot, unreal mass of roots like Ive never seen! Medusa she got nothing on this guy! So I mixed up my rich and basic (i.e. cheap) compo and added a fair amount of shredded paper as per last time, added water and got all messy mixing it all in. Like cold cake mix, lovely!
Here she is, fingers crossed for flowers next year...

| Hey Larry...Very nice O. Phalaenopsis. You know, depending on the type of Phal, some bloom 2-4 times a year?? I can't tell you which types, since I haven't the faintest. Happen to know what color the flower will be? Toni |

| I'd opt for a more coarse mix.... that stuff looks sludgy, and Orchids for sure love oxygen for their roots. Josh |

| I'm a Phal killer but that soil mix looks way to thick to me. |

| What you can see is just the top layer, underneath its more porous. |

| Toni, thanks, theyre both photos. The shreded paper, well I read that orchid compost should be very loose and open so not having access to specialist orchid compost, and not willing to splash out on one orchid that may or may not survive I made my own, and it worked! Im amazed I got it to survive as I thought orchids were difficult. |

| Larry, your Phal is doing great. Shredded paper never came to mind. If you order packages via the mail, you'll note, despite size of item, it's packed with a zillion and one styrofoam peanuts. lol. I've used smaller peanuts when repotting. Hey, why not recycle, right? What's difficult to one is a breeze to another. Agree? I used to kill Pothos, one of the easiest plants around. People would say, Toni, Pothos is for the brownest thumbs. Oh well.

| Hey, Toni, I mix Orchid Bark, red Lava rock, and Perlite for my Orchid (and other plants). Larry, that sludgy stuff on top will impede oxygen exchange. I'd watch it closely. Josh |
