I'd opt for a more coarse mix....
that stuff looks sludgy, and Orchids for sure love oxygen for their roots.

I'm a Phal killer but that soil mix looks way to thick to me.

What you can see is just the top layer, underneath its more porous.

Larry...forgot to ask..what do you do w/shredded paper?

The shreded paper, well I read that orchid compost should be very loose and open so not having access to specialist orchid compost, and not willing to splash out on one orchid that may or may not survive I made my own, and it worked! Im amazed I got it to survive as I thought orchids were difficult.

Shredded paper never came to mind. If you order packages via the mail, you'll note, despite size of item, it's packed with a zillion and one styrofoam peanuts. lol. I've used smaller peanuts when repotting.

I used to kill Pothos, one of the easiest plants around. People would say, Toni, Pothos is for the brownest thumbs. Oh well.

Hey, Toni, I mix Orchid Bark, red Lava rock, and Perlite for my Orchid (and other plants).

Larry, that sludgy stuff on top will impede oxygen exchange. I'd watch it closely.
