I'm with the videos you've seen, unless you just happen to have a very bright, very cool, and very humid location just waiting to receive your ferns!

I chop them all the way down and keep them on the dry side for the winter. They will start to grow again but don't encourage it with lots of fertilizer.

In the spring, I would chop them in half to divide them, also trimming some from the bottom while you're at it. Repot all ten ferns in porous, barky potting medium (Fafard Heavyweight mixes are ideal) and reintroduce them slowly to the outside.

Ferns need to be divided aggressively in order to keep them happy and healthy. Some people even divide them into thirds.
