That is a Fittonia and those are the flower spikes. I'd remove them.

This plant likes lower light (not bright or direct sun), high humidity & yes, I too would pull off the flower stems (they deplete energy from the plant).

Also, this plant benefits from frequent pinching, which helps to keep it full & lush. Looks happy & healthy, Enjoy!

In my hurry earlier I forgot to say yes, it IS a Fittonia.

I tried to ID with a book and then I searched Google. Neither source had pics with the flowers on it so I could not make a firm connection. Thanks for commenting everbody. Yay it's a fittonia!!!
