My umbrella tree is dying

I received what is now a 5ft. umbrella tree (3 stalks) from a friend who recently died of cancer, so it means a lot to me. It's tall and has done beautifully. But last month, several of the leaves on one of the stalks just started drooping, then the next day, all of them drooped. I notices that the stalk was brown, and very soft near the top right below the leaves. Within a few days, all leaves were gone and we had to cut the stalk.

Now the other stalks are turning that brown color at the bottom. The leaves still look good. But I don't know what is happening. There is one thing though. Over the summer, we had to move it to a different window, one that brought in a lot more sunlight. The plant looks like it was trying to escape the light because of the way it is leaning. It was the stalk nearest the window that died. But it's been in that location before with no problem. That used to be its regular spot.

If anyone has any idea, thank you.
