do I cut these back hard?

I just inherited a few plants from my co-worker, and I cut back most of them pretty severely as they had all gotten very leggy/scraggly looking. there is one though, this schefflera, that I just don't know where to make the cut. do I cut it to 6" above the soil line, or at the first leaf node?

If it were mine,and I had a mind to chop it back hard,I'd take it down to what you see in the detail below. I'd make cuttings of the chopped leavings,and then make sure to do an equally hard prune on the roots and pot the whole thing down to a six inch pot or so.

Also worthy of note...this is not the time to do this really.

Next growing season would be better for it from what I hear.

I concur with Jon. With Winter around the corner, you're not going to get the best growth. Wait until Spring or Summer even.
