Green Orange (Mandarin) Plant

I saw this rag-tag Mandarin plant at Home Depot and had to buy it despite the fact that it looked kind of sickly. I had never seen such a nice orange colour and the card indicated that the plant prefers low light, which is great for me as I have a dark house. The soil was dry as dust and some of the leaves were split down the middle (still are). I am wondering if I can remove the leaves that have splits down the centre. They are big, mature leaves, not the like the little new ones growing out from the bottom...
i would like to save this plant. Of course several days after purchasing it I saw that Wal Mart had several healthy specimans for half the price -lol. That said, I would rather revive the one I have....any suggestions?

'Fire Flash' (Chlorophytum amaniense), also known by a couple more scientific names are pretty easy plants to care for.
I bought a couple of them a few yrs back from the sale table, or dead cart rack,(gave one to sister) much in the same conditions yours is in it sounds like.
I pulled off all if the damaged leaves (plenty of those) and what a difference! They looked like healthy brand new plants!

Mine sits in front of west window where it gets bright indirect light, dapple light, and a little direct sun throughout the day. I'm not sure how well it would do in a darker situation. If it's too dark, you might lose the orange color.
It seems to prefer semi moist soil soil over dried out. It usually gets watered once a week. although sometimes I can skip a week if it still feels moist enough.

There isn't an easy houseplant. YOu can't go wrong. I have mine at least 3 ft from at E window that is mostly blocked by curtains and other plants.
I water it once a month and keep it on the dry side.
I think this pot really sets off the cool orange. I've had it at least 3 yrs.

Here is a link that might be useful: cool
