Indoor Automated Gardening System

Hello, I am a University student that is working on a final project for school. Our group is attempting to create an all-in-one gardening system to grow and maintain plants indoors using sensors and computer systems.

What are the largest hurdles in home gardening (lighting, replicating outdoors, etc.)?

What parameters need to be measured when gardening indoors (soil temperature, humidity, pH, etc.)?

How could more closely monitoring soil quality have an impact on the plant?

Any other advice on this topic is greatly appreciated! We are people who have the technical knowledge of computer systems and sensors but lack the knowledge about gardening!

It's easy to adjust light and temperature. That leaves soil choice and nutritional supplementation as key factors. The more open (free-draining/ well-aerated) a soil is, the less critical you need be about nutritional supplementation and watering intervals.

Growing well is about finding the 'sweet spot', and the sweet spot is where things that limit your plant aren't. IOW - skilled growers aren't regularly blessed with genetically superior material, they simply are better at eliminating or ameliorating the effects of limiting factors, which in turn allows plants to grow closer to their genetic potential.

Growing in hydro is going to make life a lot easier.

I suppose you could have a simple ballcock arrangement to control water level.
