poor flowers! (peace lily)

Hi all

My peace lily has been growing and growing for the last month (springtime), but I've noticed some things about the flowers:

- in the past, the flowers poke their heads high up above the foliage before opening. My flowers are really small and are nestled within the foliage instead

- the stems of the flowers are quite weak; they're thin and wavy so the flowers bend over half-heartedly rather than standing up strongly

Does anyone know why this is? I know my peace lily REALLY needs re-potting because it's massive and I"m watering it every 2 days, but I thoguht doing that would disturb the flowers. But could that be a reason they're so weak and little? I"ve posted a (not very good) picture. There's actaully a flower on the other side I didn't get, that's fallen out the side of the PL.

I would definitely repot it. I divided mine a year ago into smaller plants. It grew so much stronger with a ton of blooms. Fertilizer during active growth would be good too.

Hmm, so you think the weak stems and flowers are because it's too crowded and needs repotting? Would that kill the flowers that are currently trying to bloom - I'm a bit worried about that?

The weak flower stems are probably from insufficient light. Tight roots usually reduces extension, which has almost the same effect that shortening a flexible stick has - it strengthens it, making the shorter stick more difficult to bend.

I would divide & pot into a free-draining soil in the spring. Go easy on the fertilizer (especially now), and use a soil that allows you to flush the soil at each watering as this plant is not very tolerant of high levels of salt in the soil.
