Watering from the top is perfectly fine. You should have no fear of rot with respects to watering from the top.

They get rained on in nature, so in most cases it'll be okay.

However, you may want to do it early in the day so that the warmth and sunlight will help the water evaporate off the foliage quickly.
That's what I do with plants that are prone to crown rot (like Phalaenopsis orchids).

It's the water that stays in the soil/potting medium too long that causes damage. It can sit in your peat based mixes and block air from getting to roots and without air,roots die and rot. This is why those who use peat based stuff add other ingredients like perlite in order to fluff it up to let air move through it better.

Assuming we are still talking about the peace lily,they don't succumb to rot as easily or quickly as some others. Being native to swampy areas has to play a big part in that.

I really disagree with Asleep 's assessment of peace lily. It is notoriously sensitive to root rot. Growing Spathiphyllum takes a fine touch....the potting medium should be kept moderately moist but never sodden.

As long as your potting mix is fast draining and porous, watering from the top should be fine.

I guess I should have stated that this had been my own previous experience with PLs in general.
