need advice on calathea

I just bought a calathea crocata, love the orange flowers and the dark foliage. I did read that they don't like direct sunlight, would grow lights be any good for it? The article I read said they need to be misted regularly, how often? Any tips on growing these? Marg

Hey Marg,

Congrats! A new Calathea. Crocata flowers are so very pretty..Orange!

Gro-lights work, but plants need natural light, too.
Are your gro-lights near a window?

Regarding misting. Marg, I'm a firm believer when it comes to spraying plants.
When I had the energy, lol, I'd mist 2-3 times a day. Especially humidity-loving tropicals.
Nowadays, I spray 1-2 two times per day.

Keep a mister near your Cal, then spray away.

I don't know how much effort you want to spend on a plant, but soaking in the sink, 'when soil is dry,' really perks Cals up. Actually all plants perk up when bathed and/or showered.
If a hose is attached, spray leaves, too.

Have a photo? Toni

My grow lights are near a west facing window. I moved the calathea to a counter about 3' from the window because I thought it was a bit big to go under the lights. I did spray it because I bought it at a supermarket (first time I've seen one up here (the calathea not the supermarket!) and I thought it was a bit dry. I left the spray bottle of tepid water near the plant. I'll post a picture soon. Thanks. Marg
