Christmas Cactus Question about Blooms

I have a true Christmas cactus that I purchased last year. Early this fall, I moved it from the kitchen table to a different room in an attempt to get it to form blooms. The kitchen light is often on late at night and I read that it would interfere with bloom formation. Windows in both rooms face south.

Well, I have noticed that small buds have formed and want to return it to the kitchen so we can enjoy the blooms. When should I do this? When the buds are small or when they become larger? I will post pictures tonight (I tried to take some this morning but the light streaming through the window made everything else look dark).

I have a Thanksgiving Cactus on the kitchen table which I did not move and, amazingly, part of it has buds. I believe it was the part next to the window. I moved it off of the table to carve pumpkins and when I put it back I noticed the buds. So far, no buds have dropped.

Does the Christmas cactus need bright sunlight when it is in bloom? I have a plant stand in the kitchen about 4 feet from the window where I would like to put it, but it receives a lot less light.

I love these plants and the blooms they produce. Any help would be appreciated since they were all purchased last year and this is my first attempt at getting them to bloom.

These plants dont like being moved when in bud, when the buds are small they will abort. But Ive been informed that when theyre bigger its safe to move.

Val, I agree with Larry.

Before moving, allow buds to grow larger or better yet, when flowers open.

As for light..Bright is okay, but not full sun..Flowers fade faster from high temps. Since the sun produces heat, flowers will come and go before you have time to enjoy.

Congrats, getting your CC and TC to bloom...Toni

Yep, I also agree.
Wait until the buds are about a half-inch long before moving....
and when you move it, try and position it toward the same light exposure it had before.

Yup, I am with everyone else on this.

By the way Toni has a good point. Keep it out of the sun at all costs, for such a thing will only wilt your flowers faster than you can blink your eye.

Thanks for the information. I will wait for the blooms to become larger and almost ready to open before moving. I am excited to see the CC bloom. When I purchased it last year, it only had one bloom and I got to see it only for a couple of days before it was spent.

The TC was loaded with blooms when I purchased it. I took it home and repotted it immediately. I lost many blooms but it was still loaded and I learned a good lesson. Needless to say, when I got my CC and EC I did not repot them until after all the blooms were spent.
I wish I had more space with the light they need. I would love to collect more of them. Thanks again.
