Wait 'til it warms up again...the usual advice is actually to wait 'til it's been actively growing again before doing any pruning...say around mid june or so.

I'm not sure what you're seeing, but the predictable response of ficus to drought stress is wholesale shedding of foliage as the plant prepares for what its chemical messengers are telling it is an imminent consequential dormancy. The plant sheds foliage as a protective mechanism, to reduce/eliminate transpirational water loss. That's also the usual response when the tree is moved from brighter to considerably dimmer light, as would be the case in most basements.

OK, so I'll wait until next spring for the pruning.

As for the watering, I cut that way back on advice from my brother, who is a horticulturist. I probably gave them a cup or two of water 3 or 4 times all winter, and lost about 10% of leaves, instead of 75% in past years. I'll take pictures now and again in the spring.
