Question about Al's mix and Spider plants
| | |
Posted by syrinth 5a (My Page) on Mon, Nov 2, 09 at 17:16
| I have two questions, just figured I'd wrap them into one post.
Question the First: What role does the bark play in Al's Mix? I'm still kind of confused on that topic. It's a concern because I only have Turface and Perlite right now and the bark is kind of annoying to find in any decent quantity.
Question the Second: So I have a spider plant that was previously not doing too well. Since putting it into Al's Mix and giving it a "brush cut" to remove the damaged leaves and track any more browning, it seems to be well on the way to recovery. However, I wasn't sure and so removed one f it's babies, which seemed big enough to me and place the bottom bit in water. Nothing happened. What did I do wrong? The base was about 1 cm, 1 1/2 cm in diameter or so. |

| What happened to it? The case of the cutting was a 1/2 around"? I don't get it. |

| Nothing happened. It stayed in water, the leaves slowly seeming to get waterlogged and start sagging and getting a little mushy. A few of them started to turn black. Eventually I said to Hell with it, pulled it out of the water and put it on the top of a pot with turface in it like I've heard other people do to get it to root. The leaves eventually started withering away. I was down to like, two green leaves last night before I threw the poor thing away. |

| The bark has about the same water retention as the average between Turface and crushed granite, so it doesn't significantly contribute to or detract from the soils water retention characteristics. It's simply a good inexpensive, lightweight filler that does contribute a nearly insignificant amount of nutrition as it slowly breaks down. I have grown many plants in only screened Turface or a mixture of screened Turface and grower grit, so there is no reason you can't omit the bark if you choose. Just be sure to stay on top of your nutritional supplementation program. It's hard to say what happened to the spider baby, but we can probably be sure that something fungal took it. They root very easily, but if the mother plant had just started into a recovery phase, the plantlet may have had very little in the way of the energy reserves required to push new roots. They root easily in water, but potting them directly in a sterile, well-aerated medium (like screened Turface) is a better choice, so perhaps after the mother plant has rebuilt energy reserves, or even just after changing from water to the solid medium, you'll be able to make another try. ;o) Good luck!! | Ok cool thanks, the bark is actually more annoying/expensive to get it seems than the turface and perlite is so I've just been using those. Here's hoping for the next time *crosses fingers* |

| Do you need to talk about your nutritional supplementation plans (fertilizer program) or are you comfortable with what you have planned? Al |
RE: Question about Al's mix and Spider plants

| I'm using the Miracle Grow all-purpose fertilizer with micronutrients, the one that has blue granules. I put about a pinch into about a litre in my watering can. Been doing it that way for about two, two and a half months now and no plant complaints yet. Although if you have anything else to say on the subject I'd certainly love to hear it. |

| What are the NPK %s of the formula? Did you add dolomitic (garden) lime or gypsum to the soil? I ask because the MG fertilizer has no Ca or Mg in it, and you need to be sure your plants are getting those very important nutrients in order that they might grow to their potential. Al |
RE: Question about Al's mix and Spider plants
| | |
| Whoops sorry, the NPK is in accordance to the numbers you wrote in your soil discussion post, I made sure of that. No I haven't been adding that... drat. |
RE: Question about Al's mix and Spider plants

| While on the topic of gypsum, where can I order it online? I bought this big bag of epsom salt only to read that I need to use it with gypsum. I use the MG all purpose fertilizer (24-8-16 NPK) btw. |

| I wish I could help, but with your user info indicating you don't live in the states it's difficult to guess where you might find it. You could always try dolomitic lime and forget the gypsum and Epsom salts. Al |

| Where's likely to have dolomitic lime? I think most of the places around me that carry gardening supplies have closed up their garden centres for now :( |

| Jeepers - you guys that live in Canada! ;o) It's hard to say because you probably don't have the same brands we have in the States. Here, we would just go to a grain elevator for a generic 50 lb bag, or find a large plant store that has an all-year display of Espoma products, but unless there's another member from Canada who can offer some more specific help, ...... I was wondering if you'd be back to ask about the nutritional aspects. I mused that if you came back, you were pretty committed to learning more about plants, and if you didn't, you either thought I was full of beans or didn't really care all that much. I'm glad you came back. ;o) Good luck. Let me know if you think I can help further. Al |
