Houseplant Hydroculture!

I have recently found a GREAT blog on growing houseplants without soil. I just thought I would put it out there. I'm planning on converting some of my plants to the method shown on my link.

Here is a link that might be useful: Water Roots

Theresa,
Have your plants fared better in soil or hydroculture;did you use the method shown on my link?

Thanks for the pics!

The plants that I've done so far, are doing great. The african violets were almost dead when I converted them. I just put them in a north facing windowsill in a baggie for humidity for awhile. If they wilted I would put them back in the baggie. within 6 wks. they had buds!
I did use the method you mentioned off the Water Roots website. She uses clear glass containers. I also am using regular pots and a deep saucer that holds water. Got that idea from this website.

I'm Glad it's working for you. Perhaps I should try hydroculture on some african violets. Thanks for the link. I wish clay pellets weren't so expensive and unavalible. Did you order yours online? If so, then can you tell me your source?

Thanks Threasa,

I have a hydroponics store close by me. Hydroton was $40 for 50 liters.

Hi
Don't know if it would work in your situation but I use several sizes of crushed lava rock. Use it for epiphytes mostly though. Can get it for around 3 C/F I prefer the black since it holds less moisture.

Hey karate! This is the same blog I spotted about 3 weeks ago and have been trying to find those clay balls myself. I'm excited that someone else is interested in this any asking questions! I mentioned in the other thread that I have some plants but mine are in water only without clay balls.

Teresa, your plants look great! I have a coupld of african violets but was hesitant to try hydroculture with these but with your success I might have to try this.

I have a little african violet that my friend has given me because she says she keeps it on the verge of death (too much water and got root rot). So what would be the best way to do this? Cut everything back until all the rotted stem is away. Place in a bag for humidity and wait until it roots?

Thanks
Ashley

I'd just try rooting the leaves, maybe.

Hi Ashley,
You definitely could cut all the rot away on the african violet, take off bad leaves and plant the neck up to the bottom leaves in the hydroton and bag it.I gave them a gentle bath once or twice a day to keep hydrated. It will probably be a month or two until you see improvement.I couldn't get over how improved they became!

Thank you Theresa. I will take it home tonight and work on it. I don't have a big bag to place it in. Should I wait to cut it? I have a lot of humidity in my house (this is good and bad) so if I place it in soil and mist it everyday, would it be ok to not use a bag?

Thanks

Ashley

Ashley, If you keep an eye on it, you could mist it a few times a day. Try it, what do you have to lose? Let us know of the progress.
