Alternatives to moss/coco fiber for poles for climbing plants?

Every so often here I see a pic of a gorgeous plant - often a vine-like Pothos as in a recent thread - grown up and around a "pole". Never've seen one in person, but most such posts mention the support as wrapped in or stuffed with sphagnum moss or coco fiber.

I'm curious. Does the material just provide a structure for elements like aerial roots to bite into?

Does it have to be a natural plant product? Would a similarly organized synthetic work, or do these plants care about the difference?

If they don't care, are artificial moss poles commercially manufactured (or artificial moss alone)? Or perhaps do-it-yourself-ers take some sort of spun polymer or fiber and make their own. (Guess I can picture someone using the cheap material that crafters stuff pillows and quilts with - "batting", or maybe simply rolling-up an outdoor carpet fiber side out - again assuming it would work.)

Thanks from this long-time lurker first time poster.
