That does stink, I get so frustrated when things like that happen...you get so excited for your order... have to wait for it to be delivered...then just to be disappointed and be forced to return it for a new one or refund and still be forced to wait longer....and its the holidays so the mail is even slower...
I hope you get it resolved quickly...that light does look nice, and for that price it should at least work.....Are you gonna let them replace it or are you getting a refund?

I am hoping it will turn out some dumb thing that I did wrong and they can tell me how to fix it.
If not, I will send it back, and buy another from a different company.

It may be important to you to have a 'nice' looking fixture. I would be very disappointed too. I try not ordering on line for that exact reason.

I get by using bathroom strip fixture (I think they are called vanity fixture) - this one is chrome & has 6 bulbs in it. I have couple, each cost me $6 (no ) + cost of CFL lightbulbs (got 6 of them, 100w each, for $13+tax). So each set up was just about $20. They are 3' long. I attached some chains so I can suspend it as low/high as needed. Large pic is what I am using-not very good photo, hope you get the idea. Forgot to say that I also added a cord with a plug, so add approx. $5. It actually looks good enough to have in LR or kit...1st photo is from the net:

I am in process to make something similar by using plastic bulb holders - this is for the basement 'plant room' (each less than $2), using same light bulbs. I can make it as long as I need to. This require little more time since making from scratch & you may not have time, but cost is again very minimal & it will work for sure.

And I have added timer.

I bought the fixture (without bulbs) in 'restore' - not sure if you have that in Ireland - I would think so, maybe just different name. They were brand new, even had the protective cover (plastic) on chrome part. Looked like from a closed store. That's why only $6. I would have bought more if they had any left! They are probably $30+ in store; but less expensive in white and even less if plastic.

When I finish other fixture I mentioned, I'll post a photo. I am using these lamp sockets:
