potting soil flies

I used some soil with some type of composted material (palm maybe?) that I can't find the name of again. I've had ever increasing house flies. Not fungus gnats, not fruit flies, not drain flies... regular house flies. We cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. All the garbage has been going out in the freezing weather immediately when full, I cleaned the animal cages but the cages are on the top floor and basement while the flies are on the first floor. The only thing I can think of is this potting soil. I've been letting the top get a little dry but I think I could let it dry more. I utterly suck at watering. I have killed pretty much everything. This potting soil mix is awesome. I have actually have things growing. It holds a little water a long time and it pulls excess water to the bottom so everything stays balanced. Whether I forget to water or water often the plants keep growing.

So what could I do with the flies without changing my potting soil?
